.308 Win loads using VARGET

Post by iKonic Status »

Hi Guys

I've just finished working on some loads with the 155g Sierra Matchking, min to max charge weights of Varget in .3g powder increases and different seating depths. I wasn't really that impressed!

So, I have recently purchased some 168g Berger VLDs and 155g/168g Hornady A-Max to see if my gun likes one of them.

If anyone has some advice on suggested loads, that would be great!!

Rifle is a Howa 1500, 24" HB, 1-12" Twist, not bothered about loading beyond Mag Length!!

Also, Berger suggest to work some loads from 0.010" 'jam into lands' to 0.120" jump:

Load 24 rounds at the following COAL:
1. .010″ into (touching) the lands (jam) 6 rounds
2. .040″ off the lands (jump) 6 rounds
3. .080″ off the lands (jump) 6 rounds
4. .120″ off the lands (jump) 6 rounds

I have never used the Berger VLDs, so could someone please tell me whether I should start at Min charge for Varget and load the different seating depths (24 rounds). After deciding which seating depth produces the best group, then increase the powder charge until I find the best group with the seating depth and powder charge. Is this correct?

Thanks inadvance!!

Regarding 155 SMK (Palma) bullets. These were designed for PALMA shooting from 1x13 twist barrels (I believe 26" to 28" long). They always worked for me in my Service Rifle's (M14) at 1000 yards but my barrels are no where near that length.

You can also play with neck tension, different primers and various lengths which may improve results.

Thanks for the reply!!

Regarding the 155g Palmas, I have tried a number of combinations including different seating depths and bushings (from light neck tension to tight neck tension).

I'm gonna give the Bergers and A-Max's a go and see what success I can acheive with them.

Thanks again for replying!!

Varget should settle down between 44-45 gns with 168's.
I would run a seating depth test at 45.5gns. Find the sweet spot then adjust the powder charge. But thats just me.

jo191145 - Cheers for the advice!

A few days ago I contacted Berger about some possible load help, and they responded really quickly. Their customer service is fantastic, so well done Berger for that...it was much appreciated :wtg:

They noted that Hogdon VARGET is an excellent choice for the 168 and 175 Berger VLD's and suggested that I should start at 38.0g (min) and work upto 42.5g (max).

They were kind enough to provide me with load data from 110g to 210g VLDs. If I can figure out how to add attachments then i'll add them otherwise i'll created a new post with all load data copy and pasted (old skool way ;) )

Please choose the bullet weight from the sheet tabs at the bottom of page and look for the powder you're using.

Again, thanks to those that replied and thanks to Berger!
