what primer to use

Post by burrich »

New to reloading rifle have done shotgun alot. My question is in the hodgden manual it says to use 205m but on line it says not to use them. In a 204 can you get 24.6 of 322 with cci400 primer and be allright or will it not burn right. Thanks for the info.

I would stay away from the 400's. You can use the 205M's, CCI 450 Magnum, CCI BR4 or Remington 71/2 BR's

When first got a 204 I ran into the same thing as you. I had been told I could use "small rifle primers" so I bought Rem 6 1/2. Well for stick powders (like RL 15), they worked just fine..but with ball powders if I wanted to move a 32 V-Max at more than 3600 fps I ran into primers that were cratered. Once I switched to CCI 450's everything was great.

The Remington 6-1/2 primer is intended for cases such as the Hornet or Bee family that work on much lower pressure than the 223 or 204.

Although it is indeed a Small Rifle Primer, the factories do themselves a disservice by not clarifying this on the product box.

I use CCI BR4's and I love them and all of my handloads are consistant.

26.5g of IMR4895
39g Sierra Blitzkings
CCI BR4's

I can make 5 shots touch at 100 yards out of a stock $500 dollar Savage.

Anyone use the Winchester WSR? That's what I've been shooting and I have noticed that at close to max loads they do start to flatten a bit. Wandering if I should switch to Remington 7 1/2 or CCI BR4's.
