Is it time for me to Neck Turn?

Hi everyone,

i've recently started reloading for my .308win and .223rem and getting some great early results but am wondering whether I need to start Neck Turning or not.

I neck size my brass, using Redding Type-S with Bushings for both calibers, but on reloading I notice that i'm 'part-sizing' the neck - as in the bushing doesn't go all the way down the neck to the start of the shoulder. This is creating a bit of a 'Doughnut', nothing really bulgy or anything, and so far isn't presenting me with any problems. I have the bushing and die correctly installed so no issues there but it seems strange that the bushings don't go all the way down the neck to the shoulder. Maybe they shouldn't....not sure!?!?

Do I....should I, purchase a Neck Turner and remove the 'Doughnut'?

Could someone give me a bit of advice please.

Many thanks in advance ;)

Konrad

iKonic: Unless you have custom barrels with necks cut on the tight side, or using brass with grossly thick necks or necks of varying neck thickness, there's no need to neck turn for a factory barrel. If you remove too much material from the neck instead of just cleaning up the high spots, your necks will start to crack and split from expansion in the SAMMI cut chamber. Leave it alone, just continue to neck size, only F/L size if you need to chamber the cases with less resistance or have to bump the shoulder back a tad.

As for the bushing not touching the shoulder, you have it set up properly now. You should leave the bushing to 'float' in the die about 1/8 of a turn on the stem so it will be free to center on the neck of the case. The doughnut you refer to actually helps center the case in the chamber giving a false shoulder/neck to center on in the barrel.

Save your money from not buying a neck turning device, and lay in a good supply of powder, primers, and brass. It's all getting dear here, what with our new "president" and his anti-gun crew about to take over, people here are really starting to horde components. Americans were getting tired of being called dumb or stupid....then we went to the polls November 4th and removed all doubt. (sorry for the political tirade.....)

re:RIO

As I'm not experiencing any problems I didn't think that I needed to get into the Neck Turning game but wasn't sure, hence asking for a little guidence and wisdom from the likes of yourself. Thanks!!

Thanks for the Heads Up on correct Bushing installation too, mine is already just loose enough in the die to hear that feint 'rattle', but thanks again.

Oh and no worries with "sorry for the political tirade.....", ....we've got it pretty bad here too my friend, trust me!! I just bought 2lbs of VARGET and it cost me £76 ...that's about $123 US
Brass is silly money too, which is why I buy Privi Partisan Match ammo, shoot it once (it's beautiful BTW in my .308win HOWA...those 142gr HPBT are just stunning!!) and then reload the cases.

All the best
