Barnes Varmint Grenade In the 22-250

Post by FireBallGuy »

Just for a laugh today I picked up some of these bullets to see what they can do. My savage FVSS has proven itself very capable of shooting 3/8" groups at 100 yards with it's favorite loads but I am always longing to try something different. Using barnes data so I loaded 40 rounds each with H335 and Varget in 1/2 grain increments. Just wondering as to how well these bullets are shooting for other peolple out there? I think an ultra speed load might be a lot of fun for short range bunny blasting (300 yards and less). Also, what other powders have any of you tried with this caliber/bullet and got great accuracy with? Thanks everyone, have a safe and happy new year.

Hello, I have a 22 250 Savage LRPV. I tested the 69 grain HPBT Sierra's and my gun loved them. I have the 1 in 9 twist so it stabalized them very well. I used 35.7 gr. of IMR 4350 with CCI BR primers and I got .3 for a three shot group at 100 yards. Im wishing I had 5 bullets to try.. Next week I plan to really break it down and see if it will shoot better. The sierra book calls for 36.2 gr for the accuracy load with 4350 so I will play with that. I also tried the 63 grain Sierra's but couldnt get them to shoot worth a darn. I tried this load with IMR 3031 and IMR 4350 with CCI BR primers.

How did the varmint grenades shoot for you? I will be using the 69 grain load Sierra's to shoot prairie dogs so do you know if the matchking bullets will be very good? I heard they are like a full metal jacket and dont expand, so that would not be good to shoot them in open country.

Ill be anxious to hear how those shoot and I will let you know if I find any new loads after testing next week.

I have little experience with these heavy for caliber bullets as my FVSS has the standard rate of twist for the 22-250. Sure they have a highber BC than the lighter bullets but personelly don't think they are the ticket as a varmint bullet. You may be able to hit your critters with them but what of it when the bullet connects? I have read of many guys who do but they are using a bigger case (243 win, 6mm rem, etc.) as thier vehicle for these bullets. With higher velocity I am sure you can get some expansion going on. Which brings me back to my post........I was asking others how well the varmint grenade is working in other people;s gun. How accurate are they? What sort of speeds are being achieved out of what guns.....you know. I as well as waiting to get one of them LRPV's as I think a better factory varmint gun has yet to be built. Good luck with your load developement.

No problem man, in this forum I find it way too easy to get off topic myself.

I tried BL-C and it shoots under .5 inch 5 shot groups. My load is quite mild and right out of Barnes #4. 38 grains BL-C with a CCI 200 primer. It's running right at 4200 fps and shoots like a dream.

I assembled 100 rounds of test ammo using H335, varget and RL15. WHen the weather warms up a little I want to give them a go. I reralize they are only a short range proposition but they should be a lot of fun out to 300 yards!!!
