A really good load BUT......

Hey all,
Goin to Northern PA this weekend to see if any wood chucks are poppin,
I have a really good load for my .243 and it's shootin 4" high at 100 yards.
Hopefully it close to zero at 300 yards. Man, .... Savage makes a tack driver of a Rifle,
no pillar bedding, but I heard the barrel is better than average.

It shooting a 1/2" group at 100. The accu- trigger is set at minimum setting.
Any thoughts at how to tighten up the group?

I used Lapua brass, CCI 200 primers, and Hornady 87 grain v-max bullets along with
37.5 grains of IMR 4064. The flash hole for the brass is uniformed, necked sized, with
Lee collet die, the primer pocket is uniformed, which I do that for good anvil contact,
Fire formed brass, and seat bullet on the lands.

A couple.

Have the action timed and trued.

Bed the action.

Replace the barrel.

Try some Berger 95 grain VLD's (probably wont see much of a difference @ 100 yards).

I assumed a muzzle velocity of 2900 fps and it looks like you'll be pretty close to zero @ 300.

Without changing the barrell and action work.
The rifle shoots 3/8's of an inch @ 100 yards.
I suppose the best for a stock rifle.

If you're getting 1/2" groups at 100 yards from a 243 you're not likely to to a lot better without spending some serious money. Short of bench rest matches, why worry about "better" than that?

What model is it? If it's not one of the Savage target action rifles I'd be very happy with 3/8".

Varminter, i have to disagree with sagebrush about getting a 243 to shoot better than a 1/2 inch groups.

Try this load, 70gr. berger bullet set at 2.620 OAL lenght.case lenght 2.620, i use rem. cases and 42.0 grs of varget powder. This is being shoot out of my old H. B. rem. with ws2 coated bullets. So if you play around enough with different loads you can get there.

I'm sorry for not putting up a picture of the group as i'm not set up to do that. But if you think i'm bsing you i'l send the target right to ya. The group size was .085,

Seems to me that 1/2" @ 100 yrds will drop a woodchuck everytime! I wouldn't spend a bunch of money to improve beyond what I'm able to do behind the rifle. Gary

I was told that the tighter a group at 100, the better,because it will start to spread out further down range. The only other thing I haven't done it check runout on bullets and cases.
