New 223 load for me...

I am under 1/2 pound of Accurate AA2230-C powder and no more available. So, the hunt was on for a new powder.

I recently purchased 1000 69 grain Nosler HPBT's (they were on sale - NOT seconds). My 12FV liked the Sierra 69's so much, I could not pass up the sale.

Nearly one hole in five shots. I am getting a touch more velocity due to the FV's barrel length. 25.6 had a hint of the Fed 205M primer just barely cupping. 25.8 had the same hint of primer cupping and the bolt was a smidge heavy on lift up - just barely able to notice.

25.0 - 2948
25.2 - 3042
25.4 - 3046
25.6 - 3044
25.8 - 3117

I believe the "node" is 25.2 to 25.6. I loaded 30 rounds at 24.8 grains of H4895.

69 GR. SIE HPBT 69 H4895 .224" 2.235"
24.0 2870 41,100 CUP
26.0C 3069 49,700 CUP

This is my first centerfire varmint rifle - two + years old and 2500 + rounds. My 17 year old son FINALLY went to the range with me today. Don't know why, he was never interested in shooting. He shot his 22 LR for 50 rounds or so and then I sat my 223 on his bags. Handed him some rounds and pointed to targets to shoot. The rounds are some of my last AA2230C rounds - I KNOW where they will hit to 500 yards. I told him - 2.5" high at 100 yards is where the rifle is sighted in.

He positively took out a couple of 12" steel plates at 100 yards (69 grain bullets do that with authority). His eyes were wide open and a big grin appeared.

Next, I said, the 6" lead chicken. Bang - done.

Next - there is a 12" x 8" plastic jug at 300 yards - see it? Yep....one shot....done deal.

It is truly amazing watching somebody that has not shot that much start taking out targets at whim. If he only knew what it took to get there.

12 FV - $425
Scope - Nikko Stirling 6-24x56 mildots - I got a screaming deal on it - $139
Mounts/Bases - $30
Choate Ultimate Varminter - $115
Total - $709

Look on his face when the 100 yard chicken and 300 yard plastic jug disappeared - PRICELESS!

Can we go again dad?

YEP! :D

acloco, Great story about your son.It looks like youl have some good times ahead of now. I've always had real good accuracy with h335 powder in my 223. But i've had alot of time on my hands right now. So i'm working on comeing up with a load with h4895 just to see how it will do in my 223. The h4895 really works good in my 204 so i thought i would just try it in my 223. Good luck on your load work with it.

It's the savage bv an older one I think it is a 20 inch hb. I see the midway flyer had 2230 for sale $9.99 for a 1lb er. If that is the same powder your looking for. It just says accurate 2230 i hope that helps you out some.

Lee - nope...saw that too. It is 2230-C - kind of like a "data" powder. Faster burning than 2230 regular.

Thanks for the heads up though.

Yes, yesterday. Just opened the box tonight.

I had to drive to Denver airport and back yesterday afternoon - I was a bit tired with driving in the wind and dodging the LARGE tumbleweeds in eastern Colorado (larger than my full sized pickup!!).

LOL!

We are in a tornado watch tonight - 46 spotted so far. Look at the weather station - from Texas all the way to Nebraska.....ugh!

But tornado free rain would be nice...

Acloco, Sounds like you may be interested in this deal if you are one to buy in bulk. Apparently Midway has some of your 2230 left at $9.99 a lb. Thanks for sharing a great story.

FYI http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.e ... mid=117479

Should one wish to experiment with TAC that is on sale as well.

Acloco,

Make it through the night O.K.? We got about 7 inches of snow here just south of Denver overnight. My family in Goodland had a tornado move just 5 miles east of town.

Sounds like those guys down south around Amarillo and Beaver, OK got smacked pretty good.

Looks like you might be out of the field a while with all that rain.

What town do you live in?

Robert harrel,

I am sorry to hear the bad news about your coworker.

Sorry to hear about your co-worker as well.

I am in North Platte, Nebraska - the "sandhills" region. About the last town of any size before you get to Colorado (west of us).

It shook, rattled, rolled, and rained...but no tornadoes.
