20 practical

Post by Storeyteller »

Just put a 26" 1:11 twist CBI barrel on a Savage action and was wondering if anyone had some suggestions for loads. I'm pretty well stocked on bullets from working up the 204 and I have lots of Varget, n-140 and n-133 on hand. I have some Benchmark, H335, n-530 and n-135 as well. Any help would be much appreciated.

I suggest you get a hold of the developer of that case. I don't see a listing for the practical in Todd Kindlers terrific twenties manual.

Thanks for the link. I've read that article several times over before and after putting the rifle together, but forgot they mentioned the n-133. I'm pretty sure the powders I have will work, I'm just trying to figure out where to start. I'm comfortable with Varget and have loaded tons of .223 (same case) with it so that's what I'm using now. In my experience you can't put too much Varget in a .223 case to cause hi pressure with any bullet under 70gr. YMMV
I read several places to just use 20TAC (basically the same case) data. That makes sense but the data is pretty limited. There are also some that say to use the low end 204R data minus 2gr as a starting point. That sounds like as good a place as any to start as any, but I was just wondering if there was anyone on the forum with some experience with the cartridge...that has the use of both eyes :D

...you can always drop Robert a line, sounds like he has data.
