I had a few my wife went shopping in the big city I told her to look for a box or 2. She come in carrying 6 boxes of 40 gr v max. She paid 19.00 per box. I don't know if that's height but I am happy and proud of her. She said she bought all they had. The guy told her the 40 gr didn't sell as good as the 32 gr. I just need to know some powder ha's pet loads. I will be using win brass CCI or win or mag tech primers they have a thicker face mag tech . I can't find any match primers does it matter on coyotes. What powders work best with the 40 gr v max for ya Ty. Richard

The 40gr V-Max is the most problematic of the 204 bullets due to its length. Many 12-twist 204's will not stabilize that bullet, so know that going in. I have my best luck with that bullet in my 11-twist rifle using RL-10X and H4895.....my 12-twists just won't tolerate it, but that's just three rifles, you'll have to try them in yours.

A target shot during load development with my 11-twist and the 40gr V-Max. Noting spectacular, but shows it's my only 204R that will tolerate that particular 40gr bullet. The Nosler 40gr BT does much better in my 12-twist rifles.

If the V-Max won't shoot in yours, try the Nosler or better yet, try the 39gr SBK.....the choice of most 12-twist 204's in the heavy bullet department. :D

My Howa 1500 is a 12 twist rifle in 204. The only combination I could even get close to 1in. group with the 40gr. Vmax, is with H4895, WSR primer. I did not really play with seating depth, but my load will group right at 1/2 in. @100 yards. The only reason I even developed this load was because I still had a box of 40gr. pills left over from when I first got my 204R. So this is my backup load just in case I cannot find the 32's or the 39's, as these 2 bullets will group under 1/2 in. with my rifle. I just picked up more 32gr. Vmax, as I use this bullet in my 204 and my 20VT. IMHO you have the 40's right now, so if it were me, I would see how they shoot out of your rifle, but as RIO stated the 32's and the 39's seem to shoot the best out of the 204R.

When I was looking the other day, I seen the Vmax for as high as $24.00 per 100. I found the best price at Sportsmans Warehouse. I bought a couple 250 packs for $44.00 ea.

Out of curosity, does anyone know if the Nosler 40 grain ballistic tips are as tempermental in 1-12 barrels as the Hornady VMAX? Haven't tried them myself.

I haven't tried them but the length of the nosler of .745 and the length of the hornady is .752. So I would imagine that they would be as tempermental through a 1-12 barrel.

I wonder what the Nosler length with a comparitor is?

A SBK 39 gr is: 0.359 and a Hornady VMAX is: 0.377.

Thx

My rifle TC 1@10 twist so I hope it shoots the 40 gr. I bought 2 boxes of the 500 ct 32 gr z max from powder valley. They had them at the time 54.00 per 500. My local Gunshop has the 32 gr v max for 18.00 a box. I have some of the nosler 32 gr HP too

You could try some win 748 !
My load is 28.5 grains in Winchester cases, Winchester small rifle primers.
Velocity should be 3700-3800 fps.
My rifle is a Tikka T3 varmint heavy barrel with a 6-18x 40 scope.
My best group Is about .3 for 5 shots.
Start at least a grain lower and work up to it.
