Recommend a neck turning tool, please

I really need to start neck turning my brass and my FIL's that I borrowed many moons ago ( 25+ years) is an RCBS tool that I think there are better tools available for turning probably 3000 rds of brass that I want to true up ( 221, 223, 17 rem, 204 R ( of course) and maybe even a 243.


I have looked at the K&M online and it seems to have a nice fine adjustment screw for setting the cutter, curious what all you neck turners prefer.

Allen....my vote goes to the Forester trimmer with the outside neck turning attachment installed. I use mine for calibers from .17 to 7mm, and get TIR readings on my rat rifle brass from zero to .0015". I use it alot when forming .17 Mach IV and .20 VarTarg cases, and also for cleaning up domestic factory brass for factory chambers.



It also trims or course, inside neck reams, and hollow point bullets. A very versitile little tool.

i agree 100% with what Rick said, the Forster tool offers solid performance and a very reasonable price when considering all the other operations it can do.

I've been turning with a Sinclair 300,(no longer offered),which is difficult to adjust,and I wasted many pieces of brass in the learning phase.I researched the Forster,and along with Rick's recomendation,I called Brad at CRT(Sponsor),and ordered one,that I'll set up for dedicated turning.Mostly 243 Win brass for a .270 neck Ackley.I will be working with it in a few days,and will let you know.

I've used mine since 1973.....still works perfectly, and gets used every week. Just for fun, here's some "Bench Porn".....



Neck turned .17 Mach IV cases, formed, neck turned and annealed from R-P 221 FB cases. As it's almost "Rat Time", my little Sako Vixen/Shilen 17M4 is ready to go.

I use a K&M and it works well but when doing a bunch of cases it takes time. However, the part that holds the case can be chucked up in a drill and the turner placed in a vice and the operation is quicker.

I have an RCBS trimmer, but I think my dad has a forster, I'll have to go give him a visit and see if his is one.


Is the advancing screw calibrated, or a fine thread for small adjustments? The K&M seemed like it has a nice fine adjustment, but the hand tool is a disadvantage over the forster setup. I'll go visit their website.

The K&M can do some really fine adjustments. With the hand tool it is slow which is why I have started using a slow variable speed drill.

Forster for me. Versatile, easy, reilable, and a great example of Yankee ingenuity.

Couldn't ask for better IMHO, but I have to say that I've not used any of the others. I can say that since I began using mine, my impression has been "this is really nice, amn I like this thing" vs. "I don't like they way it ______".

I use K&Ms carbide tool. I have not used others, but it's simple and I like it. I didn't even wreck any brass in setting it up! I bought their chuck for a drill and it's works well. I use this for all my 6MM AI brass that I make from 7X57 brass.

My Forster trimmer/neck turner arrived Friday,so set it up,read the directions (twice),and turned a few 243 cases.After using a hand tool,that was hard to adjust,I'm like'n this more and more.BTW you can also trim with the neck turning pilots,However the trim pilots aren't suitable for neck turning,due to the taper.Thanks Rick
