FL sizing vs neck sizing

Post by 700remguy »

Hi guys,trying to work up a load for a new 700rem,7mm mag,bedded,floated .
Im trying both neck sizing and full length sizing,150 gr sierra SBT,60.5 gr 4831,Federal 215 primers. All 3 shot groups are 1 inch or better, the neck sized groups slightly tighter, however,I notice the holes in the neck sized groups are ragged. Also, all groups are stringing vertically.Whats up?Thanks,Matt

Your barrel is probably not broken in yet....and the stock is putting weird pressure on your barrel.

I have around 100 rounds thru it,had it bedded and floated ,Ill have to check the stock clearance. As far as the ragged hole with the neck sized rounds,I suspect a squareness issue with the die.Im using an older RCBS press, there doesnt seem to be any excessive wear, and I havent had any probs with other calibers(although Im having a devil of a time with my 204 and 39 gr sierras, well attack that later). Thanks for your input,Matt

What distance are you shooting from (100 yds)?

Don't over look trying different powders and primers.

How are your runouts?

Tried 4350,had pressure issues (bolt lift) well under max. Im going to check concentricity of both full and neck sized cases,I strongly suspect an out of square condition with the dies seating in the press,I think will be more exaggerated with the neck sizing die.Im going to try to "square the die",but it seems tough with the coarse thread of the RCBS dies.I just purchased the neck sizer for the 7mm as well as the 204 and havent used them very much yet. As the weather warms Ill be able to experiment more and see if neck sizing will be worth the effort, after all we are talking about factory guns with a bit of tweaking,Matt
