308 Win..

Post by Ray P »

My question is what is the best barrel twist for a 308 win? Most of what I have are pre 80's and have a 1 in 10 twist. My nephew just bought a new Rem 700 green varmint stock 26" varmint weight barrel in 308 win with 1 in 12 twist. This must be one of there newest one out has the new X pro trigger in it, set at about 3 lbs.
Thanks for and replies and thoughts.
Happy Easter to All.

A 12 twist should stabilize any bullet worth shooting in a 308 Win.
According to Berger and they're bullets past 200gns require an 11 twist.
These bullets are designed for something with a little more boiler room than the 308 Win. anyway.

On the other hand I tried a few 208gn Amaxes out of a 10 twist Savage tube and they shot pretty durn tight. The ballistic arc of an artillery shell but accurate

Ray,

Coming from my highpower experience, I'll choose a 4-groove with a 10 twist everytime. The exception would be a 5R Obermeyer with a 10 twist. Barrels in these configurations just seemed to shoot all bullets better from 150 - 200 grains.

If your're shooting heavier bullets 200 gr plus I would defiently go with 10 twist.

What sort of distance are you intending to shoot at? If you want to go long distance, 700+ yards, you might want a slightly faster twist, like the 1-10" to stabalise the heavier bullets as mentioned by Jim White. Otherwise a 1-12" twist will do just fine for slightly shorter distance and the lighter bullets.

I have a 24" 1-12" twist Heavy Barrel on my Howa and I've recently found that it likes the 155g A-Max and loves 168g Berger VLDs. The Bergers will give me the legs out to 1000 yards but the lighter A-Max might be bouncing around in the wind too much, although at shorter ranges posts really small groups!

I would decide what distance, application (hunting or paper punching or both ;) ) and bullets you might use. Then decide the twist from there. Either way tho, I don't think you can go wrong with either a 1-10" or 1-12"

Ray,

You can always get a 11 twist in case you can't decide ;)

Thanks for all the replys. I just didn't which was the best twist for the 308 win. Most of my custom barrel jobs use a twist for the heavest bullet per caliber as long as you have the horsepower to drive it! I have a 8 twist on 7stw, 8 twist on 6mm remington and 10 twist on 300 wby imp and a 10 twist on my 338 lupa imp, all are doing real well. Guys here in Pa at our Pa 1000 yard Benchrest club are using an 11 twist with the 300 wsm and 190 bergers. So may pros-cons on the little 308 win.
Thanks again

My old Palma rifle had a 1:13 twist 30" Krieger. Real nice shooting match gun.

Current .308 is running a 1:12 twist 24" Krieger, and particularly likes 155's - 168's.

I haven't seen the guys with 1:10's doing badly though... Not at all...
