Rick - Thanks for the clarification and help. I am looking to have Leupold add a BDC to my scope at some point but until that happens I thought I could make one of your niffy little charts.

I've got my uncle's Savage .17 HMR on loan right now and it's a great shooter. My girlfriend, who's shot a rifle twice in her life now, pulled off a .5", 5 shot group at 100 yards with it! Not bad for a cheap little savage and way to go Sara! I've yet to try it on any type of game but potatoes ...

Rick - I've got what is probably a very basic question for you, sorry for my ignorance! Here's my example: Using the PointBlank ballistics software, I've set it up for a target distance of 250 yards. So would my 100 yard "come up" be the 1.65 inches? If so I would continue this process for...

SportFaller - I'm glad you went with the Savage, my buddy has the same rifle as yours and I've got the Mark-II BV (laminate version). I've had good luck with Federal Game-Shok 40 grainers so far. Last weekend I put 8 shots in one jagged hole at 50 yards! As far as your clip question, I know Savage ...

I'd take the savage all the way. I've had both, no longer own the Marlin! My new savage likes to tear ragged holes!

Guy - awesome pictures! I haven't forgotten about the .308 and I was doing a little looking around on T/C's website at the new ICON and I see it's cambered in 22-250, 243, 308, and the new 30 TC. Out of those options, I would most likely choose the .308. Hopefully they will offer additional cartidg...

Rick, The right bullet and shot placement is more important than caliber, and you don't need a magnum for any game that walks the lower 48, period. I couldn't have said it better myself. For some reason I've never had the itch for a huge magnum rifle or any of the new fancy super-duper short magnums...

Looking for a good all around centerfire for large game

I figured I would make a new post instead of highjacking EJ's "Hog Hunting" post. I'm looking for a good all around cartridge for taking antelope, hogs or elk. I would say a majority of my hunting would be antelope or hogs with an occational elk. My intial thoughts were .270 or 7mm mag. Pl...

I had a model 70 chambered in .270 briefly........way too briefly and I'm kicking my self for selling it. I figure I'll shoot more hogs and antelope than larger game like elk so I'm sort of leaning towards the .270 but the 7mm has caught my eye. I don't want to highjack this post so I'll make a new ...

Whistlepig & Rick as always thanks for the advice. I'm planning on taking my 41 mag but seriously thinking about picking up a larger caliber rifle also. Unfortunetly in Illinois, I can't deer hunt with rifles so I've had no "need" for a larger caliber. I think the hog hunt is as good ...

I'm taking mine to the range this weekend for it's second outting! I'm also hoping to get a load worked up. I've yet to shoot at 200 yards with it, I can't wait to see what it does.

What's a good caliber for hog hunting? My dad, brother and I are planning on making a trip to Texas next summer for a hunt....guess that means I "have" to get a new rifle!
