Re: Stock bedding

Lee ..... I wholeheartedly agee with Rick. I have used both kits and much prefer the Brownells Acraglass Gel. Regular Acraglass and the Miles Gilbert kit if mixed according to the directions are very "runny". Sometimes you need a some bedding compound that is very fluid, but I've found th...

Re: Greetings from Iraq

Old School , Thank you for the update and God bless all you brave souls who have chosen to defend our freedoms from those who would like to take them away. There are a lot of us on this forum who can definitely indentify with you as we did our part back in Nam. Be safe and as Larry the Cable Guy sa...

Re: Free Float Barrel

ymmit , Welcome to the forum. You will find a wealth of information here. As for the Rem 700 VLS, I have one in .204 which I have been shooting for two years. Yes, they come from the factory with the small "hump" of wood you are referring to. All the previous posters have given you good i...

Re: Dogtown load

Hi WP , Just a side note on the Nosler 34 FBHP .204 bullets. As I mentioned earlier, these bullets tend to come apart readily and really launch a sage rat. I killed four badgers last year using these bullets. I estimated the badgers weighed between 15 and 20 lbs a piece. Distances were between 90 an...

Re: Dogtown load

Whistlepig , I did some testing with the Nosler 34 FBHP's early last year just as rat season was getting started. I tried them in both of my .204's (700 VLS and Howa 1500 SSHB). They certainly don't group like the 39 SBK's but group well within "minute of rat". Here's some sample loads I'...

Re: howa bolt closing issue

crazy2medic , I own several Howa 1500's and have worked on several others. I have not experienced the problem you describe. However, I would like to pass on some hints when adjusting Howa triggers. First of all, the trigger pull adjustment screw is on the front of the trigger. The locking nut is me...

Re: .223 Loads

Just looked in the new Nosler manual: Nosler 40 gr. BT, Min 26.0 gr. 3304 fps, Max 28.0 gr. 3547 fps. 100% load density. Nosler lists the 28.0 grain load as being the most accurate load out of all the powders tested. The test rifle had a Lilja 24" barrel with a 1-12" twist. So, not sure ho...

Re: .223 Loads

majcl5 I haven't found any data for a 40 grain bullet and Win748. However the Hornady Seventh edition manual does list it for the 45 grain Hornet bullet on up thru the 60 grain bullets. 45 gr Hornet bullet, #2230, Min 25.5 gr, 3100 fps, Max 28.6 grains, 3400 fps. 50 V-Max, #22261, Min 24.5 gr. 2900...

Re: Opinions Wanted - Ballistic Software

Hi Rick
I also use Quick Load. I certainly don't claim to be an expert with it but am learning as I go. As noted above, using actual chronograph data and feeding it back into the program works like a charm. Highly recommended.

Re: .223 Loads

Here's anothter vote for Benchmark. I have two .223's (bolts) that dearly love a diet of Benchmark and 40 Vmaxs, 40 BT's or 40 Blitzkings. They shoot any of these bullets equally well, but I do tweak the powder charge a bit for the different bullets. But, as Rick pointed out, you need to use a powde...

Re: Nosler Accubonds .338/225grn

Ray P, Congratulations on the outstanding group! It doesn't get much better than that. I think you've got a keeper there. Those big critters better watch out when you're out and about. Thanks for the feedback on the load. I have not tried H4350 yet but will in the near future. What primers where yo...

Re: Nosler Accubonds .338/225grn

Ray , Like RIO, I haven't had much luck in the tag lottery lately. So, can't help you with any personal experience using the 225 Accubond on elk. I have a couple of .338 Win Mags, one a Sako and the other a Howa 1500. The Sako loves the 225 grain Accubonds and 210 grain Partitions. The Howa prefers...

Re: WTB- Looking for a gloss scope.....

You might want to take a look at the new Nikon Monarchs. I just picked up a Nikon Monarch, 3-12x42 SF in gloss. For whatever reason the gloss models are $10-$15 cheaper than the matte versions. I bought one to put on a 338 Win Mag because it had a more generous eye relief than some of the other bran...

Re: Powder question

I had ~4 lbs of old H4831 that I needed to get rid of. I opted for the pyrotechnic display. I poured all 4 lbs in a big pile and then made a little trail about 5 feet long going away from the pile. (Must be all those old Westerns I used to watch on TV when I was a kid :D ). Anyway, I was very fortun...

Re: Powder question

I have to agree with acloco . Do not use this powder under any circumstances! I had a friend many years ago who learned the hard way on powder with rust in it. This was back in the days of the good old surplus H4831. Depending on how and where it was stored, it could get really hot. In fact, if I re...
