Re: what powder to use in short barrel?

Your case capacity is only 0.3 grains more than my largest. That is little enough that tiny differences in the brass itself, not your chamber, could account for it. I wasn't implying you had a sloppy big chamber, just not a tight chamber. The manufacturers tend to use tight chambers in their proofi...

Re: what powder to use in short barrel?

i dont understand some of what your saying as i am still learning, but will try a few things yes my copy is v3.6 arrived this morning the only thing i am thinking is if my chamber only takes so much psi and , that shows on the primer then it does not matter which powder i use as more still fell in t...

Re: what powder to use in short barrel?

i have just got my quickload, i understand why your thinking i could load hotter than i am as it shown low psi, but that could just be my chamber as its only factory it could be sloppy? but i put all my data in and as fro the fps it was only 40fps out from what i chronoed so at least if i leave the ...

Re: what powder to use in short barrel?

your right i never said , rem7,1/2 primers Perhaps you should try another brand before you spend good money on smithing your pin. Rem 7.5 has been known for years as one of the "go to" primers for hot cartridges like the 204. Perhaps, just perhaps during the "big ammo shortage" q...

Re: what powder to use in short barrel?

since we last spoke fred i have purchased quickload and it should be on the door mat by this tuesday. i know all to well what pressure signs look like as i ran through them all untill i put a hole in the primer.. as for case capacity i weighed some more and i had given you one that had stretched and...

Re: what powder to use in short barrel?

that vid is fuuny, and proberly true, i think i will buy quickload and see if i can get the best out of the barrel at the min a rebarrel is £650 and the gunsmith i spoke to was very honest and said i still would only gain 150 fps, so would be better tinkering with loads and data and find an accurate...

Re: what powder to use in short barrel?

Hi Tony, Not exactly what you asked but my .204 had a 26" barrel which I had reduced to 23" re-crowned & threaded for a can, accuacy not affected at all just the point of impact changed but a quick zero session sorted that out. I load 39gr SBK, 25.2 gr RE-10x @2.307" COAL with wi...

Re: what powder to use in short barrel?

so the max pressure will be the same across, all powders in that chamber although, the weight of powder will change from one powder to another..
is that right?
if so i could use that as a mark as to where my max load will be with other loads, ie re10x?

Re: what powder to use in short barrel?

fred c Dobbs, what is the psi of that load i used of h355 @26.2grs with 39grs sbk. i was just wondering if that psi would be the mark for all the powders in my chamber, would they all be on the cusp at the same psi? i hope this makes sense, as i want to know what load of re10-x in grs would produce ...

Re: what powder to use in short barrel?

It isn't really a problem unless it produces piercing. Unfortunately, you're already there. You need a machinist/gunsmith who can "bush" the firing pin hole to reduce the tolerance. Is it a bolt gun? With an 18" barrel, I took it for an AR. sorry forgot to say its a howa so, yep hunt...

Re: what powder to use in short barrel?

What pressure signs were you seeing? The firing pin hole in the bolt face of many .204 rifles has sloppy tolerances and produces an early onset of cratering. I have a Savage .204 that craters the primers on every factory load I've shot in it. Using your case capacity and the 39-gr SBK, I get 3264 f...

Re: what powder to use in short barrel?

I don't have any experience with an 18" .204 but you're not getting a lotta help here, so I thought I'd chime in. Pmax occurs about two inches down the barrel so I don't think a shorter rifle barrel of itself makes a powder change necessary compared to a "normal" length barrel. Nonet...
