Re: Nikon Monarch scopes

My last Nikon scope was a Monarch scope 5-20x44, while the settings were very good, glass was poor IMO,had a tunnel affect,my eyes were tired after 10 rounds or so, sold it at a loss, and yes I returned it to Nikon they checked it returned still same issue. I've had Nikons in years past that were exc...

Re: 39 gr blitz kings trouble grouping

The Savage 12 vlp is very accurate so with correct powder/bullet combination it will do the job, I have a Thompson center Hunter .204/ I used h4895,h322,h335, varget, Blcs, recently testing CFE223, all do very well my rifle seems to prefer the 40gr berger the T/C is a 1/10 twist. My groups run betwee...

Re: CFE223 anyone?

I've used it in both the 223 and 204, excellent groups from both,I don't own a chronograph so don't have any numbers other then to say accuracy is good which is my concern. I was using a 52 gr sierra 223 and 40gr Berger in 204, my thompson center hunter has a 1/10 twist appears to like the heavier b...

Re: Interpreting Groups

So many answers to this question not sure anyone can give a direct answer most of my bench shooting is with bolt rifles with heavy barrel, various patterns are the result of scope, front rest, stock bedding, trigger, bullet weight, powder charge, etc. All this with bolt action but even more variables...

Re: Hornady Brass consistency?

Not a big fan of Hornady brass just purchased 100 for my new 204 and find the brass very inconsistent, prefer Laupa but not sure they produce .204 ruger at this point. I can work with the Hornady brass but requires more prep work.

Re: Howa Axiom riffle .204?? or something else??

Chris your on the right track do your own research, go to gun shops and hold all models/brands you many want. I checked the following Remington 700 savage 12 Tikka T/C Howa Weatherby Sub MOA. Cooper CZ All had some plus/minus points, I must admit I do not care for most synthetic stocks on production...

Re: Howa Axiom riffle .204?? or something else??

You can't go wrong with the Savage or Thompson Center, one error on your research the T/C is 9+lbs without a scope it is a fairly heavy gun, both my Savage BTVS and the T/C are very close in weight. as you are doing I researched for 3 months prior to buying I narrowed down to Savage or T/C simply ov...

Re: Howa Axiom riffle .204?? or something else??

Purchased a Thompson Center Icon Precision Hunter some weeks back, it shot .375 out of the box with Hornady 40gr vmax some reloads shoot .250 but still in testing stage to see how consistent, the fit and finish on this rifle is much better then my Savage rifles. I'm so new at this. lol. There is an...

Re: 40 grain vmax.... my thoughts.

Just begin reloading for my 204 using 35 and 40 gr Berger's overall at this point I found using H335 gives better accuracy most groups under .500 shot a couple groups of .250 what I found odd that the 40gr vmax commerical ammo gives some fantastic groups of less then .200 rare that I find a rifle th...

Re: Loading for Accuracy Vs. Velocity

So far after 40 years of loading I've never found a rifle that I could not improve on accuracy wise with hand loads. I normally purchase one or two boxes of commerical ammo for a given rifle as a base and using that brass beginning testing for improvement, it's a great game and improves ones shootin...

Re: Handloads saved my rifle

I've been loading ammo nearly 40 years and find that I can improve any rifles performance however some are more difficult then others takes time and patience plus good record keeping to hit on that special load, for me it's part of the hobby. :D

Re: New Guy, new gun

Thanks for the warm welcome. The T/C has a 1/10 twist 22inch 5R rifling. the 1/10 should handle the 40gr berger bullets I have, the 22 inch is a little short in my opinion however at the distance I shoot won't make a difference other then little more noise. The 5R rifling seems to get good reviews b...

New Guy, new gun

Many years of shooting under my belt nearly 60 years at this point, rifle, pistol and shotgun, hunting in early years but mostly target punching now, central Texas lacks in terms of the type of hunting I enjoyed in my youth. Just acquired a new Thompson Center Icon precision Hunter, mostly in the pas...
