Re: New rifle
Another way to create groups that can't be repeated (at least without starting over) is to do what I just did. I measure all my bullets from base to ogive and sort them in trays. When I start playing with seating depth, I pick a given length of bullet and do my seating tests. Once I find my tightest...

Really nice shooting old timer!
What was your load? I'm trying to dial in my Savage 12 FCV for 40gr Vmax with H4895.

Re: Tackling Scope Cant
Thanks, Rick. I just ordered one from Brownell's. Wish I could use the Leupold caps but they don't fit any scopes but theirs. (nice looking system you have there BTW) :yeah: Know what you mean about not sensing cant. Until I get that scope level, the way I've been checking it is by my target frame. ...

Re: New rifle
Yup, like Boomer says, try the Lee collet die. Not expensive and works better than you would think. Will keep your bullet runout below .002". Even the little bullet seater that comes with it is better than my micrometer seater. One caution with the Lee die. The pin is soft and will bend as it s...

Re: Oh Come On!
When I got mine, $340 was the best price I found. I see they're still running from around $330-380 give or take. (except for Nachez...still wonder about that.) Thing's built like a tank and heavy. Tracks accurately (I tracked it againt a 72" ruler at 100 yds.) and holds zero. Glass is good and ...

Re: Oh Come On!
WAAAAAY outa line on the price. I've got one and I sure didn't pay that much. Not a bad scope for a realistic price. Not sure I'd buy anything from Nachez if they claim they sell them for over $1000. Heck, even Millett's web site doesn't list them anywhere near that price. And the $179 price...dolla...

Re: which powder
Boomer68,
I use IMR 8208 XBR, Win cases and Rem 7 1/2 BR with 26 gr. Barnes.
Groups run in the .200". Best one was .183 CTC with an avg to center of .088"

Re: Tackling Scope Cant
Rick,
I'm looking for a good anti-cant device and like the looks of the one you posted. Looks like it won't hook on anything unlike the ones that hang off the side. Can you see it easily while sighting and what do you do about the scope cover? What brand is it?
thanks.

Re: Stunk it up with my new 12FCV today :(
Glad to hear back from you. And nice to see your groups tightening up! You've brought that rifle a long way with just a few adjustments. Sounds like you've learned alot in a short time. Good going! :wtg: Next step is getting into reloading and tuning a load. Then you'll see what that .204 can do. :y...

Re: Case prep and Cartridge OAL
I neck size using a Lee collet die. I wasn't sure such an inexpensive die would be much of a help. Sure was wrong on that. I don't have any way to measure runout but, I turned Madpaddler onto the Lee die and he has a concentrcity gauge. He tells me that after measuring his loads they run from 0.0005...

Re: .204 and hogs?
Not sure. But, if I were to test it, I'd be standing in the bed of my pickup.
Somewhere on one of the forums...maybe this one, there's a post by a fellow who dropped a 95 pound wolf with a .204. Not the same as a hog, but still impressive.

.204 Ruger accuracy
Anyone want to know just how accurate the .204 can be? Check out this vid from New Zeland:

There's another one up there showing a 502 yd shot at a coyote. Not a dramatic hit but he was DRT.

Re: 40 gr CRT vs 40 Berger
Cornstalker,
I'm running my 40 gr. Vmax seated at .110" from the lands for my accuracy loads in the Savage 12. Long throat there, too. .204 R seems to like the long jump. Using 8208 XBR and Rem 7 1/2 BRs.
