Re: Standard Deviation
Well described, Fred.
Haven't seen a better practical description of the reason to strive for low SD.

Re: Just a quickie!
Lee collet for neck sizing. Couldn't find a body die for the .204 so I opened up my FL die so it doesn't squeeze the neck and use that to bump the shoulder when it needs it. Now, I see that Redding has a body die for the .204. So, I've ordered that. Guess I'll have a spare body die and no FL die. :r...

Re: holding a group at range
Here's a link with something for you to study while you're waiting for your barrel. http://practicalrifler.6.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?t=3 It's a great way to find the load you're looking for and should help you gain some insight on any problems you may encounter in your tests. Keep us posted on you...

Re: holding a group at range
Could be either. Could be the bullet, too. But, since the barrel is being cut down, it's really a non-issue until you re-work the loads for the new length. The fact that the groups vary from .25 - .50, though, tells me your load isn't stable. Have you tried running an OCW test to find the right char...

Re: Ladder test results. ( Help guys please)????
Like WJ says, shooting at 200 yds has too many variables that will affect the reliability of the test. That's why I quit using it and switched to the OCW method. You shoot it at 100 yds with a series of 3 rounds of each powder load. Usually 5 - 7 loads. Shoot the loads round-robbin (1 rd of each loa...

Re: Scope Question for Precision Shooting
Fred - North Dakota prairie. I've got a 3,000 yard view from my back yard and around a 1000 or so in other directions. Often see 'em trotting around at 600 yds, just out of effective range. Yup, terrain makes a difference. Just basing my choice on my hunting grounds. If I would hunt the river bottom...

Re: PROBLEMS WITH EXCEEDING COL of 2.260
Joe - Partially correct. My measurement really is 2.980" base to ogive. Probably wasn't very clear ('twas 0-dark-hundred when I wrote it) ;) The base to ogive measurement was taken with the Hornady OAL gauge mounted on my caliper so, the gauge length (1.0") is part of the measurement. Subt...

Same for me.GaCop wrote:I don't weigh bullets but have found my accuracy has improved by measuring a bullets base to ogive. I segregate by length, not weight.

Ah, you had me going there with the 20mph wind. 0 or 180 deg. = no noticeable effect.
Those unexplained flyers can really wreck a guy's day. I get 'em, too. I just shoot a 5 shot group afterwards and see if it was me or the round.

Re: PROBLEMS WITH EXCEEDING COL of 2.260
Hasn't been a problem for me. In fact, I haven't found a bullet, yet, that can touch the lands and still stay seated in the case. Since the rifle you're loading for is a single shot, your max COL will be to or jammed into the lands. You'll have measure your freebore to find out what that will be. On...

Re: Scope Question for Precision Shooting
I have to agree with Boomer on magnification. I've had 26x and the only use I put it to was to spot my 20 cal holes at 300 yds. Dumped that one and went to a 4-16x50 Viper PST FFP. Love that scope! I punch paper with it and snipe varmints. FFP and milrad reticle takes a little getting used to but, I...
