Re: Reverse engineering a factory Hornady 32gr V-Max
Out of curiosity I gave Hornady a call and asked if the powder in their factory 204 loads was the same as CFE 223. The guy said "maybe God knows but we sure don't". All he would confirm was the factory powder is SMP746. Hodgdon is closed on Fridays. I'll give them a call on Monday. Hopeful...

Re: Reverse engineering a factory Hornady 32gr V-Max
I believe that Hodgdon's newly released CFE223 is the same as the Primex SMP746. But it has not appearantly hit the shelves (Yet). Anyone know if that is a for sure thing ? Bill K I picked up a pound of CFE 223 and compared it to the powder I removed from a few Hornady factory 204 rounds. They look...

Re: ACCURACY PROBLEM
Like Camo, I found my rifle (Rem 700) likes a certain COAL, 2.306". My groups went from just under .5" to sub .25" for 5 shot groups at 100yds when I got the COAL dialed in.

Re: Cold weather problem
I had the same problem with my Remington 700 when my son and I went to the range recently on a day when it was 18 degrees. My 204 is most accurate when the barrel is almost too hot to touch and that day it never got more than luke warm. Even with keeping the bullets in our pockets to keep them warm ...

Re: Lets talk overall legth....
After a lot of experimentation (9 different COLs from 2.250 to 2.326) I discovered my rifle likes 2.306 inches. Five shot groups at 100 yds went from just under half an inch to sub quarter inch groups with the right COL.

One of my favorite things to do is shooting with my sons. It can be a little humbling at times but it's always great.

I agree with Kale. My 204 is a 700 SPS. The factory stock is crap but the rifle itself is superb. Very accurate.

Re: Just how important is clean brass?
I don't tumble either. I soak my brass in a solution 1 cup hot water, 1/4 cup vinagar, 1 teaspoon salt and 1 teaspoon dish soap for about half an hour, stirring them occasionally with my hand. Rise them off, use a Q Tip on the primer pocket and the brass looks almost brand new.

You're right. I remember trying a buddy's coffee porter home brew a few years ago. Delicious and potent.Sth Oz Dan wrote:Better find yourself a coffee infused porter - a party for your tastebuds.Tokimini wrote:Coffee and beer together are terrible.

Of course they should be enjoyed seperately. Coffee and beer together are terrible.Sth Oz Dan wrote:Coffee and guns - two of life's greatest pleasures!
And BEER.
But all should be enjoyed separately of course

Re: CFE223 anyone?
It's the smoothest metering powder I've used so far, a real pleasure to work with. This Sunday I'll see how it shoots.mec1 wrote:According to Hodgdon's website, CFE is a ball powder and would be more temp sensitive than their extruded powders like H322 or Benchmark. It should meter well though!
