Re: What barrel twist ?
My Savage has a 22" 1:12 twist and shoots the 40g Vmax by Fiocchi just fine. I can knock off a yote at 350-400 yards no problem. And yes I am comfortable shooting at that range with the .204. The projectile stabilizes and does it's job. I have never had a problem. I would say 1:12 or 1:11. cou...

Re: Last season
I have shot 4 yotes this past summer, just back road cruising for the final hour of daylight and 2 were with my savage mdl 25 204ruger and 40gr v-max,both yotes were between 280 yards and 300 yards and both were D.R.T..I am a believer in the 204 and 40gr v-max.The other 2 were with my 243 and 65gr v-...

Re: Temp sensitivity in powder?
even with the extreme powders,as I use h4895 with 40gr v_max,I found that a load I developed in early spring, made for a bit of a sticky bolt this past," hotter then normal July summer",particularly when I left my rifle and cartridges in my truck BAKING in the hot sun one afternoon, went for...

Re: Ladder testing / load developement
Don't try to reinvent the wheel. Find out what works well for others with similar rifles, bullets, primers, cases, and powders. From my readings here the Sierra BK bullets and Re10 powders appear to be popular. At times a load that might appear to not shoot so well might in fact be one of the best ...

Re: Ladder testing / load developement
I do my ladder test at 100 yards, lots will tell ya 200 yards, you will definitely see where the loads will tighten then open up,I have usually seen 2 sweet spots, the lower end and the higher end of load development, when you see where the loads are tightening(imperitive that you keep exact notes to ea...

Re: Ladder testing / load developement
for ladder test I -way each piece of brass. -way each bullet. -way each charge. -pick a powder you want to try, lot's of folks have had good results with RL-10,I personally use H-4895 and a 40 gr v-max,some folks can't make 40 grain work, but most have had good luck with 39grain. -pending on your min ...

Re: The 4000FPS barrier Ruger 204
hornady 7thy edition states they used a Ruger M77,26'',1-12 twist barrel, hornady cases, rem 7/2primer.
how long is your barrel??you say it's 24'' and I say you are gonna loose some muzzle velocity there,I'm thinking 100fps less then the hornady manuals muzzle velocity out of a 26'' barrel

Re: The 4000FPS barrier Ruger 204
But I'd much rather have stellar accuracy at 3,800 - 3,900 fps than so-so groups at 4,000+ fps any day. Like Doubleup sez, "a fast miss isn't worth much"...... Accuracy is what matters, speed is secondary.....at least IMHO. Time to try another powder? If you can't get the speed you're aft...

Re: weighing bullets
I weigh (and segregate by weight) bullets and brass but only when I'm doing load development. One of my objectives in load development is to find an accurate load that's also tolerant of small variations. Provided I've done that properly, I shouldn't need to weigh any more when I start cranking out...

Re: Finding loads
I have only been handloading for a lil over 2 years, and only 4 rifle cartridges,,but when I learned about ladder testing in load development,,to me that made finding loads in 223 and 204 very fast and very easy,,,and very accurate

Re: pierced primers
well I think I have resolved my piercing primer issue, went to the range today with the same load and bullet, except this time I used cci BR4 primers wich are .004 thicker, went through 20 rounds and no pierced primers.the only thing that was a lil different was, using cci BR 4 small rifle primers and n...

Re: 40gr V-Max and H-4895
pretty much the same load I'm using with my savage mdl 25,,the only problem I have is wsr primers and piercing.I'm glad to hear another savage shooter shooting the same ;load as me and getting the same accyracy,,I have some cci br 4 primers I'm gonna try to see if they don't pierce any more,,but i j...

Re: pierced primers
well I thought I would seat the bullets .007 deeper to make a col of 2.260 to see if that would help by reducing pressure a bit,but when I heard the powder crunching (compressing )..it just didn't feel right, lol. So I pulled the remaining rounds and did 10 rounds up at 27.0gr of h4895,and will shoot...
