Re: HS Precision Varmint Stock

Hahahaha, yeah, my bad. It's for a Savage model 12, with the 2nd generation 4.275" screw spacing.

HS Precision Varmint Stock

I bought this new, sanded out the channel and tang area to float barrel and tang, then figured out that by bedding my factory stock I got the groupings I was looking for, so now I'm looking to sell this to recoup money I could spend on bullets & powder. This is the tan with black stock, custom l...

Re: My awesome new stock blew apart my groups...

Alright, I got it straightened out. Thanks for all the help and input. I guess I would have saved money on that stock if I had just done more research and had been more open to try bedding the stock myself. I bedded the factory stock, free floated the tang, and finally got it to the range today. It ...

Re: My awesome new stock blew apart my groups...

I tried sliding a piece of paper under the tang and it won't fit, so I guess I'll try a shim or two. Anyone have any suggestions on where to get one? I guess I can always try a piece of pop can. Thanks.

Re: My awesome new stock blew apart my groups...

I've thought about going that route too. So far my factory stock shot better than this stock, so unless I can get my groups back down to where they were by tinkering with torque, etc., then I'm thinking I should just bed the factory stock and sell this to recoup some money.

Re: My awesome new stock blew apart my groups...

I found one of the problems; I did a double check to make sure the barrel is floated, and apparently I didn't check it well enough near the action end of the barrel and it was rubbing. I augered the heck out of that with a dremel and sandpaper. Now I have to go back out with more loads and the torqu...

Re: My awesome new stock blew apart my groups...

Will do. I took 'er out yesterday with about 40 rounds and a torque wrench and still not satisfied. Things got better, but not what I was expecting. I'll keep y'all posted.

Re: My awesome new stock blew apart my groups...

Yeah, after reading up on stuff I'm wondering if I was just better off bedding the factory stock, especially with the groups I was getting. I took mine apart and it looks like it's shifting too, even when it was bolted down to 65 inch lbs. It is a very comfortable stock though.

Re: My awesome new stock blew apart my groups...

Thanks for the help. I'll try backing off & working up. It'd blow my mind if the screw tightness would do that.

Ryutzy, there's only two screws holding the action in, and it's to an aluminum block. Also, I started at 25lbs, then alternated the screws as I worked up to 65lbs.

My awesome new stock blew apart my groups...

I have a Savage model 12 that was shooting great, so I thought an aluminum bedded stock would make it shoot even better. I don't want to name the company yet because I think they make great stuff, but the only thing I changed was the stock, which I torqued to 65 inch lbs, as recommended by the manuf...

Warne Ring Alignment Question

I've been thinking about getting the Warne Maxima rings, but are there any alignment issues with that top-to-bottom split design? I can see how a design like the Leupold PRW would be easy to get aligned, but how does it work with the verticle split rings? Thanks for the help, I'm trying to figure ou...

Re: Scope Ring Help Needed

Thanks for the reply. Now I have another question. Do the heights for the different categories of low, med, or high vary by manufacturer? Or is there an industry standard where say a medium ring from different manufacturers will be the same? This is the first varmint rig I'm assembling.
