Re: 35 Whelen??
Ray P. now if you haven't finished this project yet, I would leave that barrel at 24 or even 25 inches in length. The reason why is loss of velocity with a short barrel, that you just might have to make a 300 yard shot with on a bull elk. To cut 4 inches off a standard barrel is giving up around a 1...

Re: Old Style Buffalo Hunt!
Mike I wanted to go to the "big sky country" of Montana but that is a loooooong way and the cost of gas would be counter productive in what we got in the meat to bring home. I am not sure just where this hunt might take place as of yet. I just got my 45/120 Sharps back from Lee Shaver in L...

Re: Springfield Armory XD
Well I got rid of the wife's LC-9 Ruger, it just didn't feel good in her hands, in spite of it be able to be concealed more easily. They had a recall on hers back then, I hope that issue has been addressed with satisfaction. My wife has had 7 different pistols in 2 years time but she now likes her S...

Old Style Buffalo Hunt!
Well gents, I am planning on a Buffalo hunt or Bison as some folks refer to them sometime in March if it can be arranged. I'll be using my Sharps 1874 with 34 inch barrel in the caliber called the 45/120. It will launch a 550 grn bullet towards a bull at 200 yards (I hope for that distance) having s...

Re: Your Best/Favorite Deer Hunting Rifles?
Well gents, my favorite all time deer rifle was a RUGER .44mag carbine with a handloaded 240 grn bullet. My wife ended up with it after I made the mistake of letting her use it one year because it was very light to handle. I never got to tote that rifle again guys! Then I picked up a Marline 1895 in...
Re: 10 mm
Now I load Winchester, Federal or Remington hollow points, each one of those is backed up with a FMJ bullet, just in case the bad guy is shooting from a car etc or wearing heavy thick clothing (like bullet vest) that most hollow points will not penetrate.

Re: 270 wsm for hogs?
Now after having 2 close calls in the Mark Twain Forest, I no long use a small caliber rifle to hunt those hogs in the woods or creek bottoms. I instead use a 444 Marlin model 1895 with a 300 grn hard-cast bullet.

Re: 35 Whelen??
Ray P, in my younger days, this caliber was known to many at that time as the "poor mans .375H&H" many a big bear has been taken along with plenty of moose and deer with that heavy slug it can shoot. Col. Townsend really came upon a winner for a wildcat in those days and it did a great...

Now that is a great picture of a varmint! Yep, it will spend it's time in the happy badger retreat.
I certainly do have a lot of memories using a Triple Deuce in the fields back home.

Re: Varmint 30-06??
Now many years ago, I tried out some 110 grain bullets out of both the .270 Winchester and the 30-06 caliber! I noticed that both would "frag out" if they were to hit a heavy piece of grass or weed. Now when they made contact with the coyote, it would blow a 4 inch hole on the outside and ...

Re: Weight reduction through barrel elimination.
Trent you will most likely lose around 35 to 45 feet per second for every inch of barrel loss! In a fast caliber like the 22-250 it is no big thing other than more muzzle blast but in a much larger caliber it will really effect your kinetic energy at the muzzlel.

Re: 6.5 creedmoor, any good ?
The 6.5 mm or better yet the .264 caliber has always been a favorite out West until some negative words about burning up barrels on the .264 Win mag started it's down fall 40 years ago or more. However, it is making a come back, along with calibers like the .264/06 (6.5/06) which I have now in place...

Re: Weight reduction through barrel elimination.
I feel your pain of lugging a heavy rifle around all day! The only thing with taking off say 4 inches and making it a 20 inch barrel is simply this: You may loose as much as 50 feet per second in velocity for every inch cut off the barrel. This could mean a 200 foot per second reduction in velocity....

Re: CZ 527 American, opinions.
We have had 2 of the CZ American rifles and both have been very very accurate to say the least! I purchased a CZ in .222 Remington and it shot 1/2 groups for 3 shots with Hornady factroy ammo by golly. The wife's is in the .223 caliber and it too shoots 1/2 to 5/8 3 shot groups with our handloads. ;...

Re: Low Recoil & Big Distance...?
Critter one thing is for sure, hitting targets at 1000 yards separates the wantta Bee's from the true rifleman! I built my model 70 Winchester featherweight for hunting small to medium size big game animals under 350 yards. It has been a featherweight 30-06 for many years! I decided to give my son t...
