Then there's Montana Prairie dogs:
Even the 6.5-08 and the SN-3 6-30x58, with the 100 grain SVHP, ran out of gas at about 700 yards. Of course anything more local than that was simply mortified!

Re: Pdog/Varmint Scope
OT: You put a fine edge on the discussion. I like the European model. We as Americans being a very rich country with relatively low taxes tend to have a large number of guns in our racks or safes. We have shot guns, lever guns, semi auto black guns, Bolt Action Hunting Rifles, Varmint Rifles, ... Eu...

Re: HOT DOG ROUND!!
Here are the current 7mm bullets that I have including two cararucios. All are excellent performers but I have standardized on the 180 Berger VLD at least for now for gong shooting, etc. I bought a couple hundred 100 SVHP to try. Cartarucios in middle, Berger on right. This large variety of max perf...

Re: 39Gr Blitzkings or 40Gr Vmax
After researching around the net, and this has been a little while ago, I settled on the following: 26.5 grains 10X Federal 205 Match Primer 32 Grain Hornady Red Tip Winchester Cases The results were better than acceptable with consitent 2 shot groups with all touching at 50 yards. Velocities in the...

Re: Redding Die Failure
So here it is. They sent me a new catalog as well, which I needed. Will look very carefully at die requirements.

Re: HOT DOG ROUND!!
I basically use three varmint calibers. .260 with 100 SVHP, .204 with 32 grain Hornady Red Tip, and .17 HMR Hornady Varmint load. I don't use bigger bullets for varmint shooting. Shoot organizers don't allow them because of ricochet concerns. Don't know about rifling question. .260 has 1/9 twist as ...

Re: Redding Die Failure
Remarkable thing is the guy didn't even give me an opportunity to purchase the thing or pay for shipping or anything. Which gave me no choice but to post here and rave about their customer service. :D BRAVO REDDING!!! Critter, I too tried to pay for mine. I told them it may have been my faul...

The only thing I can pass on is what my Dad used to say (and we miss him a lot):
Any time you are on this side of the Turf, you are a lot better off than a lot of them.
Hang in there!

Re: Scope question
The No BS test for a scope is resolution under practical conditions. In my view 2x power x range in 100s/100 is practical power that should resolve 1" at range under mirage conditions, or even normal conditions. For 200 yards set your scope on 2x 200/100 or 4 power or for 300 yards 2x 300/100 o...

HOT DOG ROUND!!
OK, here is the deal. I have a 7WSM with a 26 Lilja Barrel with 1 in 9 twist. I normally load long range 180 Berger VLDs in it. However, my several years old Sierra reloading manual shows a non maximum "ACCURACY LOAD" as follows: Winchester case WLRM Primer 100 grain #1895 Sierra .284 HP 5...

Re: Redding Die Failure
Dave: Exact same thing happened to me last year. I called Redding, told them what happened, they sent me a new assembly with the upgrade at n/c. So I did, and I told them what happened, and they did. Remarkable thing is the guy didn't even give me an opportunity to purchase the thing or pay for shi...

Re: Shooting Advice and Technique
My sense is that your problem is more fundamental. Bullet time of flight for 300m is around .4 to .5 seconds. Now if I found that every time somebody illuminated one of my friends, he died. Then I would learn that whenever someone shown a light on me I would have about 1 second to move. Easily done ...

Redding Die Failure
After having loaded several thousand rounds with the Redding .204 Size-Decapping die, a cartridge became misaligned and caused me to bend the decapping pin and the decapping rod just above the expander screw. Attempting to re-straighten the rod cased the rod to fatigue and break off. This failure no...

Re: Pdog/Varmint Scope
I really like what this guy (Chuck Hawks) has to say in one of his articles: These flat shooting, centerfire varmint and small predator (CXP1 game) cartridges can often get by with the scopes recommended in the category above, but sometimes they can use more magnification. Typical maximum ranges run...

The Definitive Rimfire Page.
Here it is folks, more info that you will ever need in one place. Very interesting to say the least: Chuck Hawks Rimfire page For example, did you know about this: http://www.chuckhawks.com/dakota_sharps.jpg 80% Scale Mini-Sharps in .17 HMR by Dakota Arms (only $5845 in 2009) Might be the perfect ri...
