Varmint Battery, or at least 2/3 of it.

I recently added a Ruger 1B in .204 as middle gun.(32 Hornady Blitz at 3800+) Larger is .260 Remington with 100 HPFB at 3200+. Smaller Rifle is Cooper 57 in .17 HMR. There seemed to be a natural performance hole between these two for squirrels and pds. I think the .204 with a 32 grain Hornady Blitz ...

Re: 1911 compensator

I have had an old Clark Barrel and Comp on one of my 1911s for years. They do wonders for rapid shooting at multiple targets like plates or pins. As to barrels and comps, there is a company located in Washington that specializes in same. Schuemann Barrels. Their product also has comps available, eit...

Re: Should I get this rifle?

Giz: I have had two Ruger No 1s. The first was a 1-V in 22-250, and it was made in 1976. It would not shoot under about 1.5 MOA even though I tried to work up a good hand load for it. This may have been the period of time that Ruger had an issue with bad barrels. The second one was the 1-B Standard...

Re: 32 Grain Berger and RL-10X

I'm using 26.5gr 10X, the Federal 205M, and the Hornady 32 grain V max. I have had excellent (1/2 moa) with this bullet-Load combination. This load gave similar results in my M700 stainless, M700 Custom, and modified Ruger #1b. Can't say enough about the 205M and the 32 gr. Vmax. I also tried the Be...

Re: Leupold Scope Question

Well Captain, that's about it alright. Also, dialing the elevation is fine, as it remains constant, but wind is always changing, and trying to dial for wind when shooting rodents is like a dog chasing it's tail. By the time you figure it out, it's changed direction or velocity. I dial for wind when...

Re: Leupold Scope Question

Rick: When you said you shouldn't fiddle with the knobs because "once you start twiddling knobs in the wind, you'll get into trouble." Ok, now if you'l bear with me on this, give this simulator a shot: http://www.horusvision.com/img/hrsgame.swf You can move the sight picture around to meas...

Re: Should I get this rifle?

I have a R#1b in .204. Had gunsmith install after market trigger and Hicks Device. From dead loose but touching I screwed the hick's device in 1.5 turns. It now is among the most accurate rifles I have, including a custom 700 with a Lilja barrel on it. I won't comment on the scope as the Loopie type...

Re: 17 HMR and PD's

The PD Battery! Well, my favorites are the .260 Rem and yes, the .17HMR. That and my recently acquired .204 Ruger #1 constitute the battery. Reason for large variation in calibers is the variety of shooting conditions you run into. .17HMR is more than adequate to say 125 yards. Then the .204 and the...

Re: New rimfire scopes

Small bores are really fun.

I have a Unertl 6x small game scope on my Winchester 52 Sporter recreation and I get offers at the range people wanting to buy them. Got smith to put target blocks on the rifle.

What they don't know is they don't have enough money to buy it.

Re: 300 yard, 4-position Ruger

I used to have a .378 Mark V that I put 270 Noslers in with 112 grains of powder. If I recall correctly MV was 2900 plus. I can guarantee you didn’t fire that puppy prone. You could fire it from the bench, but you didn't hunch over, you fired it with a straight back. Standing was best. Recoil...

Re: Help with Binoculars

Rick of course has a very good opinion on glass as well as excellent equipment. However, I find myself in practice gravitating to the single eye laser range finder, even though I have a Leica BRF in my shooting kit. Why, mainly the handiness and weight which becomes a little more onerous after a day...

Has this lead free business hit the squirrel patch yet Rick?

God I hope not, I just got my .204 R#1 shooting with red tip 32 grainers.

Re: .204 with Leupold varmint reticle

One of the features of the ATRAG software is that once you have entered in the information for local conditions, it will publish a range card for those conditions just like the one you have on your scope cap. Big problem though is not range but wind effects and even that is not really a big problem....

So funny! I stopped by the Riflesmith store and reported this result to the artist that assembled this configuration. Told him about three shot groups touching at 100 yards after adjusting the Hicks device. "Oh," he said... "You are lucky you got a good barrel!" But I sai...
