Re: Finally solved my 12 twist stabilization problem!

A little extra MV won't have that much effect. The reason a bullet has to be spun to be stabilized is because, in flight, it carries its center of pressure ahead of its center of gravity. That's like shooting an arrow fletchings first. It's a "statically unstable" condition and aerodynamic...

Re: How hot is an explosion?

It shouldn't be too long before someone comes up with a composite barrel that's lighter and more durable than steel, plus it'll have harmonic properties to allow for vibration tuning. Composites is a field that's expanding at the speed of light. At first they'll be as expensive as Iranian caviar, of...

Re: Finally solved my 12 twist stabilization problem!

venison_burger, my BL-C(2) load, 30.8 grains, on average was 23 fps faster than my RL-10X load, 26.2 grains. That was with 32-gr Bergers. Unless your BL-C(2) loads were way, way light, I can't imagine the powder could have been responsible for any instability. Regardless, I'm glad it's shooting bett...

Re: How hot is to hot

Carry your bullets in a cooler. I worked up my full strength .204 load (RL-10X) in the dead of winter. When I shot it in hot weather, they clocked >200 fps faster than when I worked them up. I know the original load didn't have that much breathing room, pressure-wise, which means pressures probably ...

Re: strange scale behaviour

I was having a similar "lean over and squint" problem with my portable loading bench, so I fashioned a shelf constructed like a simple box from some wooden trim, fastened to the bench with a small Irwin Quick-Grip, that elevated the scale to eye level. http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/36...

Re: How hot is an explosion?

I think you're WAY too low. Unconfined gunpowder burns at better than 2700°C. Confine it and light it and it will get much hotter than that. Plain air raised to 60,000 psi probably would be hotter than what you're thinking. (can't find a formula at the moment to check)

Re: magnum primer accuracy

You should check out this guy's homemade primer tests. Can't tell you how recent it is but the reason I even mention it is the Winchester magnum primer had the lowest SD, lower even than the purpose-built match primers. How's that for a kick in the shorts!

Re: How much is 0.1 inch worth in fps?

Banshee, increasing the number of shots in your groups isn't going to help until you can stabilize the rifle and you know all the difference is coming from the cartridge. Your aiming error compounds the bullet's ballistic error, and there's no way to tell them apart from examining the target. If you...

Re: How much is 0.1 inch worth in fps?

If you're seeing that much movement through the scope -- if it's not parallax -- I'm going to speculate either you need a more stable shooting platform or your benchrest technique needs work. Or both. One technique to help remove shooter influence is to shoot "round-robin," alternating loa...

Re: weighing bullets

I weigh (and segregate by weight) bullets and brass but only when I'm doing load development. One of my objectives in load development is to find an accurate load that's also tolerant of small variations. Provided I've done that properly, I shouldn't need to weigh any more when I start cranking out ...

Re: 204 Maximum Effective Range

With a stout load pushing the 39gr Sierra I have experienced consistent performance at 550 to 600 yards. I believe that bullet to be stable at that distance. Energy is doubtful even for prairie dogs, I would recommend shooting them in the head for a sure kill. A 39-gr SBK has @1000 fps has about 90...

Jim, I'd count that brag-worthy. So where do they put the rifle range on a pigboat?
