Re: oregon ?
I spent a year in K-Falls in the mid-90s. I hate to break the news to you but the falls are gone. They got submerged by the dam on the Klamath river. Nonetheless, I loved it there and my leaving was completely unrelated to the town itself. I grew up in a town about the same size (~20,000) so the sma...

Re: Barrel Mounted Chronograph
I've come across several reviews on that chrono recently -- from shooters, not magazine writers -- and most were pretty favorable. It's super-fast/easy to set up. And because it doesn't rely on light, it misses out on most of the problems "conventional" chronos have. But mounting it requir...

Re: Savage LRPV 204 Ruger
Sometimes, the stars line up just so and certain manufacturers hit a "golden era" of manufacture. I think Savage has hit one with the entire model 12 line.

Re: "Woyote..." ?
Even living among us, coyotes remain a mystery "...Two separate teams of researchers studying the genes of coyotes in the Northeast reported evidence that these animals that have for decades upon decades been thought of as coyotes are in fact coyote-wolf hybrids. "The team headed by Rolan...

Re: Annealing
The problem with using color as a gauge is that it's completely subjective. You can spend good money ruining brass, annealing by trial and error until you get it right, or you can spend good money buying some Tempilaq and know how hot you're getting it.

Re: hand loads vs factory loads for accuracy
My average handloads group almost exactly 1/2 the size of the best factory loads.

Re: Reloading at the range?
I set up a rig for it but it always was windy enough when I tried to use it that I was never overly confident of my charge weights. I bought one of these at Home Depot specifically to turn into a portable reloading bench: http://www.homedepot.com/catalog/productImages/300/85/85f337cd-6548-4bcf-8772-...

Re: newbe case lube question
Something definitely has gone pear-shaped because a Lee collet neck die is not supposed to manipulate the body of the casing (or even the shoulder) in the least. If you insert a case into the die by hand, there should be no resistance whatsoever until the neck comes into contact with the collet. Usi...

Re: Reverse engineering a factory Hornady 32gr V-Max
Or you could invest the same time and effort into a bespoke load that would shoot better than the factory load. My handloads shoot groups half the size of factory loads, or better. Chronograph the factory loads and you'll have three of the four pieces of the puzzle. You've got a bullet you know you...

Re: Long range target shooting
...you get all these weird wind "swirls" that are unpredictable as heck.... It's the "unpredictable" bit that makes the .204 a less than ideal choice. The 55-gr Berger has about 1/2 the BC of the heavy 6mm bullets, which means the .204 will be subject to significantly more wind ...

Re: Just how important is clean brass?
The carbon residue left in the case neck acts as a lubricant, which directly affects neck tension. Unless you can measure and adjust the leftover lubricity to a uniform level, leaving the carbon will make your neck tension variable, which will affect accuracy. Regardless whether you tumble, in the i...

QuickLoad, the consumer-level internal ballistic software, has six different user-adjustable powder properties in addition to a "burning rate factor." And those don't include the physical characteristics of the cartridge that affect the pressure curve but have nothing to do with the powder...

Re: Factory 39Gr SBK loads discontinued?
If you have trouble with the 40-gr V-Max, I noticed Midway and Cabelas have an HSM brand of .204 loaded with a 40-gr Berger bullet. I checked the database in QuickLoad and it says the Berger is almost 0.05" shorter than the 39-gr SBK. If that's true, it should stabilize even better than the 39-...
