a quick Google search on "split .17 HMR brass" turned up this thread:

sounds like a pretty common problem with this round.

Re: .17HMR Hornady's Splitting Brass
Wow, been off this forum for a while and just got an e-mail you posted this thread. I sent the split ammo to Hornady plus the remaining rounds in the box last September. They did not not respond so I sent the letter again and called. They sent me (1) new replacement box with no other correspondence ...

Re: End of my rope
Wrangler, great info! I just called Savage and they gave me the torque specs for the action screws on my rifle 30-35in/lbs. I will check these before my next shoot. UncleBob, that is a pretty nice grouping with the 39g Sierra's. Figured out how to post a pic. Here is the shooting bench I built from ...

Re: .17HMR Hornady's Splitting Brass
I shot again yesterday and had no problems with a different box. My buddy also was shooting his rifle with no problems. I went back to the range (private) and retrieved brass under the bench from my shoot on Saturday and found 6 more split casings. This tells me my previous box was also splitting an...

.17HMR Hornady's Splitting Brass
I know this is off topic but I know many of you shoot .17HMR's. When shooting my .17HMR and .204 yesterday I opened a new box of Hornady .17's, 17g, and in the first 5 rounds split two cases sending "fliers" down range. This is not the first time this has happened. I know it is not my rifl...

Re: End of my rope
I wanted to add to my post from Friday as I shot my .204 yesterday. I was happier with my results. I shot 7/8" groups from 100 yards. Still not as tight as I like but no "flyers". The one thing that I did prior to this shoot was examine my bullets carefully before loading them and che...

Re: End of my rope
UncleBob4, I am very interested in your results and how you correct this problem as I am having the same difficulty with my Savage Model 12 BTCSS. I sold my first .204, EXACTLY the same gun to my buddy who's ranch I regularly shoot on (he loved the rifle so I did him a favor and sold it to him and b...

Re: .204 Shared Reloading Experience
Yes, the Remington primer is where I was seeing SLIGHT pressure signs. The primer looked to be just starting to bulge. I could probably get away with 27.7g of H4895 but because I did not see a significant velocity increase (1-2%) I decided to back down. I sure would like to load with Hornady's facto...

Re: .204 Shared Reloading Experience
Glen, I experimented at 27.7g of powder and found I was just starting to show signs of pressure and only increased my velocity by 30 fps so I backed down. I am using Hornady brass. I will be using 27.5g as my go to load with the Sierra 39's. I can now work on experimentation with my ballistic reticu...

.204 Shared Reloading Experience
I have received so much good info from these forums I thought I would share my results reloading for my .204 Savage Arms 12BTCSS Varminter Thumbhole. I have a 6x24 44mm Burris ballistic mil-dot on it. I experimented quite a bit with 30, 32, 35, 39, 40, & 45 grain Hornady, Berger, and Sierra's us...
