Re: Savage 12 LRPV

vastly superior materials and looks that have made grown men cry Mike.. bring your factory "Cooper" .204 rifle to No. Illinois and shoot it at my clubs 600 yard range and then I will shoot my LRPV at 600 yards and we shall see which one prints the smallest 10 shot group. They build a nice...

Re: Savage 12 LRPV

I have a Savage 12 LRPV right bolt left port in .204 its the most accurate rifle I have ever owned. If you want a "vanity rifle" buy a Cooper for the same price.

Re: 300 yd groups

Our club has a 600 yard range and I was testing out loads using two different primers. I had shot a 5 shot group with Fed 205M primers that was O.K. I marked it on the target so as to not confuse the shot groups and then switched to different load. I fired 5 rounds drove down range for a look see an...

Re: Cooper owners

I think Varget is a little slow for 204, especially light weight bullets(somebody will come on and argue but facts are facts). The most popular bullet is the Sierra 39 and R10X, Benchmark, or 4895 pushing them. Check the Favorite Loads for tons of info. What's a cooper? It a small Hawk the eats rod...

Re: DPMS or Bushmaster?

Remington, Bushmaster and DPMS in addition to Barnes bullets are all owned by the same group. I own two Bushys (6.8 SPC and .223/5.56) and I really enjoy shooting them both in addition to my bolt guns. :D

Re: Checking loads 3 vs. 5 shot groups .204's ONLY

In my mind's eye a 3 shot group is simpler for "coarse" work and once narrowed down a 5 shot group is to confirm/refine the load. Using 3 shot groups initially should expedite the process and save barrel wear not to mention the time/cost savings. Well said. You are absolutely correct in y...

Re: Checking loads 3 vs. 5 shot groups .204's ONLY

What i am trying to get across is testing loads for accuracy for a big game rifle has a different set of parameters than testing loads for a LONG RANGE varmint rifle. If you reload... the 5 shot group vs. 3 shot group will usually tell you if you took the time to produce quality ammo capable of hitt...

Checking loads 3 vs. 5 shot groups .204's ONLY

Just one comment here from an old geezer that has been shooting/reloading most of my life. IMHO three shot groups cannot be relied upon when testing for accuracy. Shoot 5 shot groups (100yds) and use that as your baseline. That will give you a much better analysis of your rifle and load. Then shoot ...

Re: Second Heavy Varmint rifle 22-250 or 6.5mm

Yes...You can use the Sierra 60gr. Varminter bullet in a 1-14 twist in the .22-250. Load it to 3500-3600 fps. Ballistic Coefficient is .271..... zero in your rifle @ 300yds.

Re: Realistic rounds per hour count

With glassing for prospective targets and checking wind conditions in addition to distance..... 40-60 rounds per hour IMHO sounds reasonable if the rats are willing to comply. If you use a wet towel over the barrel perhaps the count could be higher. :twocents:

Re: Second Heavy Varmint rifle 22-250 or 6.5mm

Gary....I use the 60 grain Sierra in my (Win. 1885 Highwall 28"bbl.) .22-250 and it put 4 shots into .75" at 300 yards today (Nosler Brass) so I think I am ready for my N.Y. state groundhog shooting trip comming up in three weeks. I prefer the heavier (60gr.) bullet on ground hogs if you a...

Re: DPMS or Bushmaster?

DPMS has a larger variety of calibers to choose from, but Bushmaster (now a part of Remington) is the hands down accuracy winner of the two. There are many other good choices out there, often higher in price or you could build your own. I have a 1-9" twist .223 Bushmaster 24" Stainless Var...

Re: 40 Brain Berger Moly Coated with RL-10X

The 40 grain Bergers are awesome, I load them with the "NEW" RL-10X using 25.1gr. and 7 1/2BR primers WW prepped cases and my "T/C Encore" (walk-about gun) will consistently group .75" at 200 yards with that load.

Re: 26" 204 Encore barrel

I have the same T/C Encore SS .204 barrel that you have on my Encore, one of three different .204's I own (BTW it does not stabilize the 40gr. Hornadys). There are several things you can do to reduce or eliminate the flyers. Sort brass by weight, sort bullets not only by weight but by base to ogive ...
