Re: Chuck Shooting
Gary, this is the second time in almost 20 years I have seen such growth in E. Oregon. The course weed crop that year, around '98, hid all the chuck dens. We just could not see them for the cover. I am quite concerned about the farmers who grew alfalfa both in the Burns/Crane area and Klamath Falls....

Re: Chuck Shooting
Gary, I don't do pictures unless I kill one of the giant chucks, of which there were none this time.
By the way, if the growth in late may and early june, is what happened in most of e. oregon, the chuckars will have lots of good cover.

Chuck Shooting
My partner and I decided to go to S. Central Oregon a couple weeks ago to shoot some chucks. It became obvious they had gotten a lot of rain from the thunderstorms that they had. I was told that they had them four weeks straight. The weeds had grown to over knee high, so seeing some of the dens was ...

Re: Scope Canting
Jim, when I went thru the process of making sure my scope was level with the action on a 243 Sako, I noticed I was hitting with more regularity. Also, hitting them where I had aimed at 200 yards and further. Since then I have put levels on all my rifles that I shoot. I will attest, it makes one heck...

Re: Sage Rat arsenal
Guy, I would try and move that date up to around the 5th of June if it were me. Around that date they are swathing the first cutting. By the time,(one month),you are scheduled to go, the hay will have grown up and hide the squirrels. Of course I am talking about alfalfa fields. I coordinate the swat...

Re: Chuck hunt turns into an EVENT!!!
I will keep that in mind. The other alternative might be to just transfer gun, dies and bullets to my grandson. I just have not made up my mind yet on how to deal with the stuff.

Re: Chuck hunt turns into an EVENT!!!
Hotshot, I think the days of having a 204 in my safe are numbered. I have no interest in shooting anything past about 300 yards at which time I will use my 243 Sako. At the advancing age of nearing 70, I just think I made a mistake in buying a 204 as I have a couple 223's that do more than an adequa...

Chuck hunt turns into an EVENT!!!
Friday morning my hunting partner, age 70 and I headed for S. Oregon to hunt chucks. We met up with my other best friend, age 76, around noon. He is a remarkable man, still working half days and enjoying life. He only shoots sage rats now days, using his time with us as a spotter. The 70 year old, w...

Re: Hard to believe!!!!!
For those of you that are interested, I think I have figured out the answer to why the 27" barrel shot 300 fps slower than the 22" barrelled CZ. The powder we were using is DP2200, a powder developed for the short barrelled 223 military guns. The only logical reason I can come up with, is ...

Re: Got some more chucks
Verminator2, I was almost there with you, in my mind. Good writing and good shooting. I am heading out to S. Oregon friday to slay a few chucks. One of my best friends, has not shot any chucks intentionally. So he is going to go and have a good time. Been looking forward to this outing for months. L...

Hard to believe!!!!!
Saturday my friend and I went out to check the sighting on our rifles. I experienced something that was hard for me to believe. The friend has a CZ 223, with a 40 grain VMax, has the velocity of 3750 fps. The barrel is 22" long. So while at it, we both wondered what kind of velocity that would ...

Re: Rock chuck weight?
Ryan, when I killed the one that measured 28" from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail. My partner and I estimated it had to weigh at least 25 lbs. When I really look closely at these monster size chucks, I don't think a pound per inch of body length, is out of the question. They are so...

Re: settle this argument for me.
Big Horn Barney, I also have a Remington. I was getting slow or delayed fires with it and just yesterday ordered a new firing pin and spring assembly. The fellow I ordered it from said that is a common problem with Remingtons because of the spring rubbing on the inside of the bolt. I could shoot som...

Re: A few chucks
Some years ago, my partner and I got a tip about a place in N. California that had lots of chucks. It was like a field day, as there were rockchucks running all over the place. I was shooting a Sako HB 243 with 75 grain Hornady bullets. There was no question on whether the chucks were hit, as they f...

Re: A few chucks
Darchell, Thanks for the compliment. Verminator2, those are big chucks in my opinion. Anything 10 lbs and above are large. Some years ago, I had a good discussion with the owner of the ranch, where I hunt. He told me that he has seen them so big and fat, that they could hardly walk around. He was ta...
