Re: Shrinking Brass?

Unless you were using some industrial tumbling media, I doubt that commercial cartridge brass media would be the cause of shrinking necks. Most likely the necks were manufactured with the variance. Hornady brass (and others too) has been known to be consistent over all, but with an occasional lot th...

Re: Bore Scopes

Some random musings: I remember a fellow that had a three year old prospective cutting horse's front legs x-rayed before he purchased her. Turns out she had a few signs of early bone disease in her pasterns, so he passed. That mare turned out to be a national champion that never had a day of lamenes...

Re: Chronographing

There are just too many variables to point to any one factor as the cause. First variable is that each shot is a separate chemical reaction - the chances of each reaction running to the same terminal point is astronomical. Variations in primers plays a part, as does case dimensions, the metallurgy o...

Re: Another sage rat expedition has concluded. (Pics and Pro

Thanks for all the comments folks, I always enjoy sharing with others of like mind. Living in California all my life, I often forget what others face living in a four season climate. Even on my 2010 sage rat expedition just ahead of Memorial Day, Oregon dished up a day where we were hit by a micro-b...

Another sage rat expedition has concluded. (Pics and Prose.)

Another sage rat expedition has concluded. This year I scheduled the trip on the advise of my Oregon friend Tony for the second week in April. He is now my former friend. Maybe that’s too harsh. Let’s just say he lost a bit of shine, like a Connie Francis tune on a country music station’s playlist. ...

Re: concentricity issues

Gee, there must be something wrong with me. I don't measure runout, or concentricity at all. Couldn't care less about it. I measure a random batch of necks for thickness, and even Winchester comes in around .001" to .0015". That's nothing to worry about, or hassle neck turning over. My lit...

Re: Nikon hath sinned against me

My last Monarch 6-24x Side Focus was so bad that I sent it back for inspection and repair. It came back with no change whatever. Both that scope and an older Monarch now sit on a shelf in the safe. What really blew me away was the comparison between two 6-24x Bushnell Elite 4200's and a 6-20x Cleari...

Re: cooper rifles?

My experience with Cooper is that they are excellent rifles, with fine craftsmanship. Very accurate too. Only problem I have found is the stock combs are too low in any varmint configuration, they are just uncomfortable to shoot, especially the Phoenix. To use mine I had to wrap a tactical rifle acc...

Re: Trip down memory lane...........

There is one thing about traveling down memory lane, I remembered all the great guns I should have kept. When I worked as a reserve police officer, we provided our own revolvers. I carried a Colt Trooper (old model not a Mark III) that had a complete action job by F. Bob Chow one of the famous pisto...

Re: .480 ruger

I have two of them, a Ruger Super Redhawk and a custom 5 shot built by Gary Reeder on an old Ruger Blackhawk frame that was sitting in a cigar box as parts. The custom was ordered with a Bisley hammer and trigger, and a Super Blackhawk grip frame - cool! Reeder doesn't list the Ultimate .480 Ruger a...

Re: Low Recoil & Big Distance...?

Do not buy a Nikon Monarch for a long range rifle, or any rifle when you want a clear high contrast sight picture. I have two of them, one an older 6-20 variable and the other a newer side focus model. The picture of the S.F. scope was so bad I sent it back for inspection - it came back the same way...

Re: JB Bore Paste

Don't scrub back and forth with short strokes using JB Bore Paste, follow the directions on the jar. Use a loose fitting nylon brush (a worn one works or one that is a size small enough to allow the patch to easily pass down the bore) wrap a patch around it, oil the patch and rub the paste into it a...

Re: 1/11 twist barrel

Pac Nor is a good deal. The barrels I have ordered and either had installed on Remingtons or their Savage drop-ins I install myself are accurate. Best thing is they stick to the delivery schedule, and the price is right. You can get any contour you want - I had my 40-X barrel matched exact so I didn...

Re: problems reloading with once fired brass

My problem is between two .204 Ruger chambers. If I fire brass in barrel "A" it won't chamber in Barrel "B" even when full length sized. Only about a .001" difference between the chambers at the head and body junction. It's just enough to stop the bolt from closing. So I tri...

Re: Bullet stability

I started my barrel twist quest when a Sako L461 Benchrest single shot in 6mm PPC USA (1:14" twist) wouldn't hit the entire target at 100 yards with the 62 grain Barnes Varmint Grenade. Finally, aiming about four feet to the right and left, a bullet struck the target - completely sideways. So I...
