Re: Bullet stability
Hey Neil, Try the JB for sure. My Savage 11 was key holing the 32bk's & Sierra suggested the JB. At the time I had over 700 rounds through the bbl & I thought it should have been pretty well broken in, but I was wrong. After a couple hundred passes with the JB compound on a tight patch, chan...

Re: 40 grain vmax.... my thoughts.
I use Remington 7½ with 27.5grs of Benchmark, I get just over 4000fps with both Hornady & Sierra. I have shot good groups with 26.5grs as well, but they were around 3850fps. I use the Remington brass because the Winchester brass didn't preform with the 27.5gr loads. Have you tried this website? ...

Re: 40 grain vmax.... my thoughts.
Hey Tony, The JB is a mild abrasive cleaning/lapping compound. I have tried the w748 but didn't get good results from it. The load that was suggested to me from a friend was 250+ fps slower than he was getting, so I tossed it & just stick with H4895 & Benchmark powders. The Benchmark powder ...

Re: 40 grain vmax.... my thoughts.
Sierra does make a 32gr & they are the most accurate through my rifle. At first I had problems with them because the jackets are very thin & when I first started using them, they would tumble. Sierra told me it was from my barrel being rough, so I ran JB compound on a patch through my barrel...

Re: 40 grain vmax.... my thoughts.
I don't really care for the 40gr V-Max either.
Have you tried the 39gr Sierra's? They are my favorite for 500 yards, plus they seem to have a lot of explosiveness on 1 gallon water jugs at that distance. More than my 30-06 with spire points.

Re: differences in COAL?
Problem solved!!! :jive: After measuring the rest of my 250 count box, I was able to separate 2-groups of bullets. Using the seater plug I measured from the base of the bullet to the top of the plug, and found that one group of bullets measured .01" longer than the other. Looks as though I rece...

Re: differences in COAL?
So I pulled the plug, and this is what I discovered: Base of bullet to where the seating plug touches - 0.53 Diameter of bullet where seating plug touches - 0.145 Thought it might have been a 17 plug so I called Redding and they tell me that is right. The 204 and 17 seating plugs are the same; stamp...

Re: differences in COAL?
Okay, so I measured my 40gr V-Max bullets, and sure enough there is differences in the lengths. I didn't measure the whole box, but rather 20 or so & the range was up to .008" Now this isn't the .02" problem I was having, but when I measure from the bottom of the bullet to the ogive, I...

Re: differences in COAL?
Thanks for your input. It is in fact .02" difference & not .002" one would measure 2.255 & the other would measure 2.273, this is in the 40gr V-Max. The 32gr V-max bullets seem to seat within the .002 range with no problems. The other thing is after seating the 32gr at around 2.246...

Re: differences in COAL?
Thanks for the advice Lefty265, I will give it a try.
And to jo191145, I was thinking that but didn't know if it was normal. I thought maybe I received a bad batch. I guess my next question would be, how do I set the seating die to fit my rifle? Thanks for all your help.

differences in COAL?
HI, I am new to reloading & new to this forum. My isue is: I am getting different C.O.A.L. when seating 40gr Hornady V-Max bullets in Remington cases using RCBS RC Supreme press with Redding A-Series dies & Redding case holder. The lengths vary up to .02" Is this normal? I would hate to...
