Re: Reverse engineering a factory Hornady 32gr V-Max
... you would'nt have to twist my arm very hard to believe CFE223 is just 748 in a different bottle. Don't risk your arm. After putting together some trial loads, I ran 748 through the powder measure that was set to throw 29.0 grains of CFE223. The same volume of 748 weighed 26.3 grains, nearly 10%...

Re: Reverse engineering a factory Hornady 32gr V-Max
Without confirmation from the manufacturer or an authorized scribe, how are we to really know if it's the actual same stuff? According to "Hodgdon's 2012 Annual Manual" it is the same stuff. In the lead article entitled Eraser , writer Bryce M. Towsley notes of the Hornady ammo that "...

In my experience, the Sciuridae family motto seems to be "Get the ketchup, they got Mom!"

Re: DPMS Panther LR- 204
My DPMS-barreled (24" fluted SS) AR really likes H4895 with 39 gr. BK's.

Re: Scope Power
Just my 2 cents, but my general preference is to put 10 to 16 top-end magnification on my AR varmint guns, and 16 to 24 on my bolt guns. I use the AR's when the targets are plentiful or moving (or both). When shooting is fast and furious, lower magnification gives greater field of view and less mira...

Re: Need a scope for Savage 12FV in 204 Ruger
I second the Zeiss Conquest suggestion. I've now got a 4.5-14x44, with Rapid Z 800 reticle, on my AR 204. I am firmly in the clarity-first camp. Longest p-dog shot with that rig, which favors a 39gr. BK at 3800+, was 507 yards in a cold, early-spring Wyoming wind. The dog was flipped in the air a go...

Re: New personal best - rabbit taken from 520 m
I have heard of a ballistics calculator being available for the iPhone. Any experience with that? Do a search in the App Store for "Let Fly." You can input all the variables (elevation, temperature, scope height, velocity, B/C, etc) and the results coincide with those on Hornady's website...

The 20 rd HK mags I have will comfortably hold rounds seated out to 2.27. However, I think the 20 rounders are discontinued.

Re: DPMS LR-204
It's a mixed bag for me with DPMS. I built my own 204 AR several years ago when DPMS began selling their 24" fluted barrel. I got one from Brownells and got a DPMS hi-rise upper from Midway. Although I didn't notice it at first, the upper was out of spec so badly that the gun rarely functioned ...

Re: AR15 Trigger solutions????
I have a Chip McCormick drop-in trigger unit in a 223 AR, and a Timney drop-in unit in a 204 AR. They are a virtual toss-up in trigger pull quality, although the Timney started closer to the rated 3 lbs than the CM to its rated 3.5 lbs. The CM is somewhat easier to install, although the little C-cli...

Re: Prairie Dog Vital Zone
What makes it tough to answer is that point blank range depends on their size and whether they are standing erect or are on all fours when you squeeze off. A well-fed, fully grown PD standing erect can approach 12" high by 4" wide (the pregnant moms can go a little wider), but a pup foragi...

Re: One Scope for three rifles
Has anyone used the Leupold bore sighter system. They say that after you zero at a given range. You place the sighter on the end of the bore, and look through the scope. Than transfer to a card where the zero is. Use a differunt card for each rifle, making scope changes for each card/range. A'm I c...

Re: Reloading for the AR-15
I've had good accuracy with charges of IMR4895 and H4895 in my 204 AR. The best ones are about halfway between book starting and max, but they cycle just fine. I've thought about experimenting with IMR8208, as it is supposed to be about the same burn rate as the 4895's, but I'm husbanding my small s...

Re: One Scope for three rifles
I suspect the only way you could make it work is to use an extremely precise bore-sight tool and keep a record of the exact setting for zero for the scope on each upper. I've got an old optical bore-sighter that attaches with a rod in the bore and a newer optical bore-sighter that magnetically attac...
