Is it possible that you got a bunch of bullets that were for the .22 Hornet? Many of the older Hornets were set up for the .223 bullets (vs. the .224s), and that is what you usually see them for.

I can't speak to the .172s, but I have the .204s from both Midway and Midsouth, and they appear to be 100% identical (shape, finish, HP opening, weight).
