IMR-3031 worked well I used 38 gr with 168 Speer match bt and LC brass....... the lyman manual at the time showed 37 gr min and 42 gr max with 49000 cup at max load. I loaded maybe a litt...

Re: Good Powder Choice for 308 Winchester in Semi-Auto
not that you have any on hand, when i loaded for a M1A1 in the mid 80's I used IMR 4064 (45 gr) in LC 81 cases with a CCI 250 using a 150 spire point that kept me around 49000 cup (according tp data taken from a lyman manual #45) so with similar burn rates Varget sounds like a good place to start

Re: i bought the red headed step child
absolutely nothing wrong with the Savage, my last 3 new purchases have been 2 Model 12 VLP's and a Model 12 F/TR. The price has always been right to invest in a good scope and a after market trigger... They are easy enouhgt for me do do my own Smithing thanks to the Barrel nut......... Now if i coul...

Re: Quagmire
Why not build what you want instead? Buy a Savage action from Jim at Northlander Shooters Supply.....buy an aftermarket barrel that is prethreaded/chambered, buy the stock that YOU like....assemble it...and be done. You can have a truly custom rifle for less than a grand....closer to 650 if you wat...
