Re: Trouble sighting in..HELP Part 2
Flash - sounds like your new rifle is really being "cranky" and also like you're beyond the "easy fix" stage. Usually Remington rifles are good shooters, so don't give up. Something that will sometimes help is increased fore-end pressure. You might experiment with a thickness or ...

Re: Breaking in barrels?
The idea is to make sure the barrel is as smooth as possible before you start "serious" shooting. Clean out microscopic imperfections, machine marks, machining debris, etc. First give the barrel a cleaning: solvent, brush, dry patch and repeat till comes out clean. Then, at the range: one ...

Re: Longest revolver shot?
Yes! It can get scary when prairie dogs get crazed with blood-lust and charge. I've gotten one or two with with my 45 Colt SAs. Longest shot so far has been about 30 yards (just to keep us on topic).

Re: New 204
Thanks, Gube, I'll check it out. Been using standard RCBS dies for 223 and 22-250 and getting fine accuracy with each, so hopefully I don't have a problem here...

Re: turret or single stage
A turret press has a built in "flex factor" that a single stage and particularly an "O" configuration does not. This potentially makes for less precision and uniformity in loads. Probably doesn't make much difference in pistol rounds but might be important to varmint rifle accura...

Re: New 204
Got out to the range today for barrel break-in. Fired a box of Hornady factory 32 grain V-Max. One round and clean for the first 10 rounds, then two rounds and clean for the next 10. Everything in about 2" not that it matters. Cleaning the barrel thoroughly now and next time out I'll start shoo...

Re: Trouble sighting in...HELP?
There are a lot of things you need to check: 1-Are the action screws (especially the front) tight? 2-Are the scope bases tightened down to the action? 3-Are the rings tight on the bases? 4-Are the rings tight on the scope? 5-Does the scope objective touch the barrel? After all that, have you tried d...

Getting started
I am about to embark on loading the 204. I've be reloading for 35 years now (I've loaded 270, 243,30-06, 308, 7X57, 7 Mag, 338, 220 Swift, 22-250, 35 Whelen Ackley Improved, 45 Colt, 357 Mag, 44 Special, 222 and 223) but this will be my first time with 204 Ruger. I have 500 new Winchester brass prep...

Re: New 204
Finished with brass prep! Of 500 brass, 50 weigh 93 grains, 110 at 95 grains, the rest at 94 grains. That seems pretty consistent to me for factory brass. Gonna start load development and (if the snow will stop) try to get to the range over the week-end and start barrel break-in and load testing. Sc...

Re: Need help with 270 reloading
Try H4831 in the 270. 60.0 with 130 bullets should give over 3100 fps and always groups well in any rifle (total of six different ones so far) I've tried it in. Also usually works well with 140 an 150 grain bullets. Usually one grain less powder per each 10 grain increase in bullet weight. With heav...

Re: New 204
I went with the very short 1.83" trim length because there was almost 10 one thousanths(sp?) variation in the new brass and I wanted to start everything as close as possible to "perfect" uniformity. I have found with other calibers that as I long as I don't go too crazy there is no pr...

Re: New 204
The UPS man brought my brass and dies so I can get started on case prep. Got RCBS standard dies and 500 Winchester brass. First thing I will run all the brass through the dies so the mouths are round. Next I'll trim everything to uniform length - probably 1.83" (quick check shows variation from...

Re: Powder question
I called IMR and talked with a tech rep. He said the dust indicated deteriorated powder and not to use it. I burned it up in the (snow covered) back yard. Made a trail of powder leading to a pile of the rest (just like in the movies) and lit it. When the pile burned it made a nice two foot flame for...
