Re: old powder
Shouldn't be a problem. Smokeless powder usually has a long shelf life. Likely you'll know if it's gone bad - smells "wrong" or very fine reddish-brownish dust when you open and pour. As to old and new lots performing the same, testing is the only way to know for sure.

Re: Hunter needs new rifle. What to get?
Winchester Featherweight Classic and Remington Mountain Rifle would both be good choices. I've used both of them (in 270) and been pleased with accuracy, portability and good looks.

Re: Progress report - Savage LRPV 204
The 223 is my main prairie dog rifle and has seen plenty of use in 90+ weather. Only time I've ever had trouble was when I left the ammo in the sun too long (my 22-250 loaded with W760 had the same trouble that day for the same reason). Lesson learned and problem solved. Of course no varmint load de...

Re: Progress report - Savage LRPV 204
Yup, that's one reason to shoot more groups. Only other rifle I've used H335 is my 223 (Hornady 52 BTHP, CCI450, 27.0) and that load has performed flawlessly for years.

Progress report - Savage LRPV 204
Got to the range for the second set of development loads today with some noteworthy results. About 25 degrees but clear and calm so good shooting. One load in particular really stood out: Berger 35 HP, CCI450, 27.0 H335 was good for 5 shots in 5/16" @3788 fps. Got about 120 rounds through the b...

Re: case trimmer?
If you have a lot of trimming to do, you will find a powered trimmer is a lot easier. I use the RCBS (case pro?) and it is easy to set up and use and it is consistent.

Re: Questions from a new reloader
Spend any time you can with an experienced, competent re-loader and pick their brain. Most likely they'll be glad to help.

Re: Hello, am new here, and looking for opinions.
I am just getting started with a Savage M12 Long Range Precision Varminter and I am very impressed. Early in the load development process and I've already gotten some 1/2" 5 shot groups. The trigger was 1/2 pound out of the box and crisp. If it isn't the best varmint rifle you can get without s...

Re: .223 Loads
FWIW - it is my understanding that H335 is very similar to W748. My Remington M700VS likes 27.0 H335, CC!450(mag primer), and Hornady 52BTSP(M).

Re: A.O.scopes
If I recall correctly, factory scopes without AO are set at 150 yards. Anywhere from 150 to 200 should be workable.

New 204 - first range testing
I was finally able to get out to the range today and start load testing for my new Savage LRPV 204. Weather was about 25 degrees, clear and calm - other than trying to keep warm, a good shooting day. Had a few Hornady factory 32 V-Max for comparison and loaded Hornady 32 & 40 V-Max and Berger 35...

Re: Primmer pocket uniforming?
Sinclair International has a flash hole de-burr tool for 204. Only place I've seen one so far.
