Re: Opinion on IMR powder.

Whatever works BEST in your application. I have a little of everything, but a lot of Hodgdon powder...especially from the "extreme" flavors. They are supposed to be better in the not so temperature sensitive arena. I work up loads in the heat....and shoot the loads year round. +1 For the ...

Re: Remington Model 700 VS SF II VS. Savage Model 12 LRPV DBM?

The two most accurate rifles I own are a Remington 700VS in 223 and a Savage LRPV in 204. Needed to work on the Remington trigger a bit; the Savage was perfect at 1/2# out of the box. If I had to pick one it would be the Savage 'cause it's ready to go right out of the box.

Re: My 1st Wildcat

I've got a 35 Whelen Ackley Improved I had built in the 90s using a 1903 Springfield action and a Shilen 22" barrel. It shoots 250 grain bullets at just under 2700 fps and works nicely on elk.

Re: 270 loads

I've loaded for about eight different 270 rifles over the years. Winchesters (pre and post 64), Remington, Ruger, Kimber and Browning. Every one that I tried it in (all but one) liked the Hornady 130 SP Interlock and 60.0 H-4831. I have also had success with the Hornady 140 BTSP Interlock using RL-2...

H335 pretty much always works for 223s.

Re: New big game rifle. 338-06 AI

Don't know much about the 338-06 AI, but I did stay at... I do have a 35 Whelen AI and if yours works as as well as mine, you'll be a happy camper. Good luck in your quest!

Leupold customer service

Two weeks ago I sent two older Vari-X III rifle scopes back to Leupold to get new reticles installed. One was a 6 1/2-20 and the other was a 4 1/2-14. I wanted the varmint hunter reticles in them. Cost $110 per scope including return shipping. I got the scopes back today with the work completed and ...

Re: Ruger 77/17HMR

I recently spent a year with that same gun. Smith and I did everything we could think of and never could get it to shoot as well as I thought it should. Every now and then a good group, but mostly about 1.25" at 100 yards. I finally gave up and traded for a CZ. That one does a lot better for me...

308 as a varmint round

On a prairie dog hunt lately my partner brought along a borrowed Ruger M77 MkII VT in 308. It wore a Leupold 4-12 and he was using 110 grain factory ammo. One day there was a hay stack and fence line measured 520 yards away and we saw a dog right under the fence. The rifle was zeroed dead on at 300 ...

Wyo prairie dog hunt

A friend and I just got back from a three day prairie dog hunt on private land in northern Wyoming. I got about 500 or 600 over the three days using a Savage LRPV 204, a Remington 700VS 223, a Dakota Alpine 243, a custom Ruger 77 lightweight sporter 22-250, and a Colt SAA 45 Colt. Actually got one a...

prairie dogs with a 45 Colt

This past week-end I made it to the Sheridan, WY area with a friend for three days of intensive prairie dog hunting on private land. Took along my Colt SAA New Frontier 5 1/2" 45 Colt and got a few shots with it. It has the regular adjustable sights, nothing special (rather like my pistol marks...
