Re: New CZ!

Skippy of Oregon is getting a visit in June... :D My teenage son and I are getting ammo loaded up, making sure the rifles are squared away and we're going to hit the road after the school year is over, southbound! Meeting up with a buddy of mine, and blasting Skippy for a couple of days! .22 long ri...

Re: 204 Ruger wins 300 yard belly match

Here's a link to a little article I put together a few years ago - the sling for field use.

http://precisionlongrangehunter.com/art ... ooting.htm

I used to shoot a bit of highpower and really enjoy using a sling, either for match shooting, or in the field.

Re: New CZ!

Steve - it was easily sub MOA, but I could not get it down below 3/4 MOA while messing with the loads. Shot only a few loads: factory: Hornady 32 gr factory ammo - wouldn't quite break one-inch groups at 100 yards Hornady 40 gr factory ammo - the CZ much preferred the 40 grain ammo, 3/4" groups...

New CZ!

Had a .204 in a lightweight, good looking CZ 527. Turned out it just wasn't the right rifle for me - I wanted something with a heavier barrel. Sold the lightweight one a while back and finally, today, I picked up the Varminter version with the heavy barrel! This thing balances much better for me and...

Re: 270 or 308 is better ?

It's all just a question of what you want to do with the cartridge.

For deer, I don't think it matters much at all.

The .270 has the ballistic edge and is one of the classic western hunting cartridges. The .308 is a long-time target shooting favorite.

Waiting on the draws...

Wyoming - put in for a non-resident mule deer tag with my hunting buddy. Waiting... Won't know until later this summer... Washington - put in for spring bear. Not drawn. Phooey. Washington - about to put in for my elk & deer tags for '09... Won't know until sometime this summer... Always put in ...

Re: 308 Win..

My old Palma rifle had a 1:13 twist 30" Krieger. Real nice shooting match gun.

Current .308 is running a 1:12 twist 24" Krieger, and particularly likes 155's - 168's.

I haven't seen the guys with 1:10's doing badly though... Not at all...

Re: Soliciting opinions....

If you've got a .17 HMR, and a .204, why not step up and get something significantly more powerful like a .243 Win, 6mm Rem, or even a .25-06? I've been blowing the snot out of rockchucks and coyotes for decades with a 6mm Rem, and more recently with a .25-06 - both work great and also do a fine job...

Getting off-topic here, but yeah, I like the milk jug tests.

Re: Barnes 150 or 165gr TSX for elk

Interesting. Thanks. Bullet tests fascinate me. Over the past year I've been slamming a few different rifle and handgun rounds into my test material of choice, one-gallon plastic milk jugs filled with water. With rifles I've mostly used the .45/70, but also shot the jugs with a .25-06 and the 100 gr...

Re: 500 Smith...(Pics)

Yeah, I bought mine sight-unseen when they first came out. Had to wait a few months for delivery. In the meantime I got dies and components and actually had quite a bit of ammo loaded for it when the big revolver finally arrived. It's the 8 3/8" version, all they made at the time. A lot of fun ...

Re: 500 Smith...(Pics)

How's that .500 treating you? :D

I generally run 440 gr cast bullets at 1400 fps, a couple of hundred fps below factory load levels. Makes a more pleasant day at the range, and I've never felt under-gunned with a 440 at 1400 fps...

Re: Barnes 150 or 165gr TSX for elk

Rick - I've only taken a couple of mule deer with the Barnes TSX, the little 100 grainer from my .25-06 Remington. The bullet absolutely hammered those bucks! Penetrated completely through and expanded, leaving a dead mulie buck behind, instantly. With the serious penetration these things offer, I'd...

Re: Finally finished custom 204ruger

Jason - a buddy of mine has a rifle built with the old McMillan Baker Special stock - in that same "urban camo" pattern. Very cool looking rifle, he's used it for match shooting for about 15+ years now, as both a .308 and as a .22-250 with a fast-twist barrel. The rifle was well known here...
