Re: 17 HMR

So... What's the expected round count on a .17 HMR before a new barrel is needed?

A whole bunch I'd think... :D My youngest son loves that .17 HMR in the little CZ varminter.... I'd like one myself!

Re: looking for a match rifle

A fast twist .223 barrel and a sturdy stock would work wonders... I'm thinking a laminated stock instead of the HS Precision... About the same price and you can get it built to suit you instead of taking whatever HS Precision is churning out by the gazillions... Fellow named Joel Russo make some sup...

Re: looking for a match rifle

I've shot NRA highpower for a number of years, managed to do fairly well a time or two. Most of the matches I shot were with a Win Model 70, in .308 Win. Everything from across-the-course matches 200, 300 & 600 yards, standing, sitting and prone, and also long-range prone events to 1000 yards. G...

Re: Carnage at the Orchard!

Jim, I'm just really tickled with the CZ, and with the 40 gr Hornady bullets. Haven't tried any other bullets, except some 32 grain factory loads when I got my first .204 two years ago. They didn't shoot as well as the factory 40 grain loads, so I bought a mess of 40 grainers, some dies and went to ...

Sage Rat arsenal

Am in the long-countdown, about a month out, from a Sage Rat Safari to Oregon! Hoping to get into the fields after a cutting... Son and I are going, he's a rock-chuck shooter, but we have no sage rats here - so this will be new to him - hundreds or perhaps thousands of targets over a few days... :D ...

Re: Carnage at the Orchard!

I thought you'd like the Cave of Death photo... :D Ol' Chucky probably thought he was pretty safe in there. Hawks can't get him. Coyotes aren't likely, since this fortress/cave is inside the 8' high deer fence... He started looking at us, and I pointed him out to my son, who promptly took care of th...

Carnage at the Orchard!

The call for assistance had come in earlier in the week. An orchardist along the mighty Columbia River was having trouble with invaders again this spring. Hordes of illegal rock chucks were swarming through and under his deer fence, into the cherry orchard! A call to arms! Acting on the latest intel...

Re: new rifle

Consider shopping for a good used rifle... Plenty of used rifles at gun shops, pawn shops and the like. If you're not real picky about the cartridge or the make, you might pick up one heck of a 250 yard coyote rifle for very little cash... A good used .223 or .243 Win comes to mind - sometimes I fin...

To post photos, you'll need to set up a free account at one of the photo-hosting sites on the web. I use Photobucket, and it seems to work pretty well. Once your photo is on Photobucket, you can copy & paste the URL into your posts on this forum to share. I really enjoy looking at all the photos...

Re: Got some more chucks

Good shooting!

You're right though - it's pretty easy to shoot too many and clean out an area. My buddies and I pretty well de-populated a favorite area and it took a few years before many rock chucks started showing up there again. We don't whack 'em all anymore. Instead we leave a few for seed.

Re: odd colored coyote

I'll be darned. Have never seen a dark brown coyote. Interesting. As I recall, most that I saw in Southern California were scruffy little gray things, not much color to them. Was surprised by the size and color of the bigger coyotes I found here in Washington. Here's the biggest one I ever shot, a f...

Re: odd colored coyote

Yup, one time out deer hunting I jumped up a coyote that was about the color of a golden retriever. Didn't shoot it because I didn't want to scare the deer out of the drainage. Some we have around here are more brown, but most are a nice silvery color with some darker & lighter fur too. This one...

Re: First time groundhog shooting, tips please!

I'm sorry guys - it probably didn't come across well - but my initial reply was completely tounge-in-cheek! :D Pydpiper - my buddies and I are very casual about our varmint hunting. Blue jeans and t-shirts or sweat shirts. Just walk through a likely area, spot & scan a bit with binoculars. Figur...
