Handloading to save money is like draining the lake with a spoon.

Re: Back from the 09 Rat Rodeo - Part I (Pics)
Excellent story Rick, great pics too. Here in CO we are working on an annual get together out on the farm for like minded shooters. Our target of choice is the black tailed pd ....I like the RV hook up deal.

Re: How short is too short?
No problem, use them. I sometimes intentionally cut mine to 1.835. Seems I always find one short one in a batch so I trim to that length to clean them up. After a couple of firings they will be right out there. FYI - your case trimmer should have some type of stop so that no matter how "happy&q...

Re: Checklist for prairie dog shoot
On my list I would leave off the spotting scope. In many years of shooting pds I have never used one yet. I would add folding chairs. But my list is short cause we are shootin pretty close to the house. Bring plenty to drink.

Re: BOTH Thumbs Up for Leupold Repair Dept.
My sentiments on Leupolds service/repairs are right in line with the thread. I was gifted an older Browning BBR that had a early Leupold 3x9 scope mounted on it. Scope was from the days they were actually brown and not blue/black. Since the rifle was basically a payment to me I didn't check it out w...

Re: range finder?
My brother in laws Leica Geovids are more than good. They are big and they are heavy but they are far and away the best laser range finders I have ever used.
The cheapy ones are good at ranging distance depending on target size but they suck as binos.

Re: 3rd Annual Trip To Co.
Never mind the "where"....I have Jimmy sworn to secrecy. I can assure you the pics don't do justice to some of the carnage shown in them. Jimmy is a "go and see" kinda guy...lol. Me, not so much. He walks more in one outting than I do in a month, not bad for a guy as young as he ...

Re: How thin do you shave your case neck? ( Neck Turning)
In my opinion its not possible to know how much to take off without knowing what your chamber measures. Otherwise its just a guess. In my custom cut chambvers I like .001 to .0015 bullet release. My 6mm chamber measures .264", loaded rounds with necks turned measure right at .2625-.263".

Re: Western Nebraska & Colorado PD count
PS if you only saw 88 antelope thru that stretch, you either lost count, can't see or again...you fell asleep. LOL! That was only counting what I saw with one eye. Now for future reference, next time you make that trip..pm me. I can let you in on a little diversion that will change your whole persp...

Re: Western Nebraska & Colorado PD count
Being a life long resident here in CO I can say two things about that. First no matter which route you took from Limon to CS, neither takes you thru prime doggin areas. You slept on part of the trip. I just spent 2 days out on the prairie and me and another fella shot 500 rds. between us. We shoot p...

Re: How sooped up can you load a 30-30?
No clue, never handloaded ammo with the intent of "sooping" anything up. Thats why they make bigger chambered guns. In an Encore there is no reason I can think of to do this. In a Contender a 30-30AI at max level is about as good as it gets for that gun. Given the amount of powder a typica...

Re: Varmint Hunting - What put the bug in you?
I have always been a shooter/hunter...at least as far back as I can remember. Didn't really get hooked into the prairie dog thing until my older sister married a dryland wheat farmer (he is also a hunter). The first time I visited them on the farm I found out what fun a whole day of shootin pds was....

Re: Coyotes have a tough weekend on the prairie
The 32 gr. Vmax isn't my first choice in coyote bullets. I happen to have several hundred loaded up and since the coyote hunting trip came up fairly quickly I gave them a go. They kill coyotes but shot placement has to be near perfect to get them to drop at the shot. If they hit any heavy bone they ...
